Adaptimmune, a leader in T-cell therapy, is a multinational, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel immunotherapies using its proprietary SPEAR T-cell receptor platform to treat solid tumors, which has the potential to transform the treatment of cancer.

Our proprietary SPEAR T-cell platform has generated a strong pipeline of affinity-enhanced T-cell therapies, with multiple INDs open. We use these therapies to harness the body’s own immune system to find and destroy diseased cells. Our SPEAR TCR therapies offer promise to patients that often have no other options. We are working hard to make that promise a reality.

We are based in the UK, in Oxford, and in the US, in Philadelphia. For more information about Adaptimmune, please visit www.adaptimmune.com.

Role Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated scientist to join our T-Cell Cloning team and help identify our next wave of T cell receptors (TCRs) targeting tumour specific antigens. The TCRs that you identify will support the development of improved cell therapies that make a meaningful difference to patients with cancer.

Reporting to the Group Leader, you will play a key role in designing and conducting scientific experiments to stimulate, expand and select tumour antigen-reactive T-cells.

You will have some prior experience of a variety of cell culture techniques and functional assays such as ELISPOT, ELISA and flow cytometry and/or flow sorting. You will be expected to be able to plan and carry out experiments with minimal supervision but may still require scientific guidance at some level from Senior Scientists and the Group Leader. Training will develop your scientific skills to be able to work more independently on routine experiments and progress your scientific career.

Key Responsibilities
  • In association with the team and with appropriate guidance, design and conduct T-cell cloning experiments to enable TCR Discovery for the company pipeline, following set protocols and in accordance with set priorities and timelines.
  • Analyse, interpret, and record experimental results accurately and in a concise and timely way, and communicate findings to the team and management.
  • Maintain relevant databases and records including completion of laboratory notebooks on time.
  • Participate in group and project meetings and discussions by presenting or contributing data to slide decks.
  • Support colleagues, the group and Adaptimmune projects.
  • Contribute to operational running and routine maintenance of the lab and equipment in accordance with the Company’s Health and Safety policies.

Qualifications & Experience

Required
  • BSc. in Life Sciences or related discipline.
  • Relevant laboratory experience in pharma or biotech industry.
  • Experience in culturing primary cells and cell lines (suspension and adherent).
  • Experience in immunoassays such as ELISPOT and ELISA.
  • Ability to work independently on routine experiments with limited supervision.
  • Enthusiasm and ability to learn and develop in order to work independently on routine experiments within a reasonable time frame.
Desirable
  • Additional post-graduate scientific experience or qualifications, such as an M.Sc. or PhD in cellular biology, immunology, cancer biology, or a related discipline.
  • Basic knowledge of immunology, with a keenness to understand immunology more deeply.
  • Experience in isolating PBMCs and primary immune cell populations.
  • Experience with T-cell isolation and culture.
  • Experience in multi-parameter flow cytometry and/or flow sorting.

Skills & Competencies

Required
  • Computer literate and ability to familiarise with different IT systems.
  • Excellent numeracy and English language skills (both written and verbal).
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Ability to follow and write protocols.
  • Competent in the safe use of standard laboratory equipment (such as pipettes, centrifuges, plate washers).
  • Basic experimental design skills, including use of appropriate controls.
  • Ability to adapt to new ideas, changes of plans, objectives and/or priorities, in a fast-moving environment.
  • Good attention to detail, time management skills, and organisational skills.
  • Strong team player but with the ability to work independently after training as well.
Desirable
  • Use of more specialist lab equipment e.g. plate readers and flow cytometers.
