About the Opportunity

The Infectious Diseases & Vaccine (IDV) group is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and collaborates with leading academic groups worldwide on a wide variety of infectious disease projects including malaria, HIV, influenza, COVID19 and antibiotic resistant bacteria. The IDV group is looking to recruit a PhD (or equivalent) Research Scientist, ideally with experience in an industrial setting or in a translationally focused academic environment. You will be working as part of a team developing antibody-based therapies and testing new vaccines for bacterial, viral and parasitic infections of global importance.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience of high-throughput cellular and molecular approaches to evaluate antibody effectiveness.

On this occasion we are offering full-time fixed term contract until end of December 2022.

About growing with us

In this role you will …

  • Establish and perform screening assays of serum and antibodies derived from Kymouse™
  • Transition relevant assays to high-throughput (HTP) settings
  • Provide training in use of functional biological assays to members of IDV team
  • Develop project expertise across the breadth of the Infectious Disease and Vaccines theme
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all experiments
  • Support patent filings and publication of scientific papers where appropriate
  • Present experimental results both internally and externally as appropriate

About You

To excel in this role, you will need to have/be:

  • PhD degree (or equivalent experience) in immunology, cell biology or molecular biology related to infectious disease
  • Experience of handling Containment Level-2 pathogens
  • Expertise in mammalian cell culture, with track record of developing in vitro-based assays to evaluate bacterial or viral pathogenesis
  • Strong motivation and ability to work effectively within a team environment
  • Able to plan time effectively, work independently on assigned tasks and execute to timelines
  • Flexible approach with ability to multitask and work to competing deadlines
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

Preferred:

  • Experience of automated high-throughput biological assays
  • Experience of flow cytometry and molecular biology
  • Experience of handling large data sets and application of data analysis pipelines
  • Understanding of B cell immunology, antibodies and vaccines
  • Authorship of peer-reviewed publications and/or patents
  • Experience of working with ex vivoderived biological samples
  • Ability to work within multi-organisation collaborations
