Aylesbury High School are looking to recruit a Science Technician to support the work of the Science team by providing appropriate resources and promoting safe and effective ways of working.

About the role

The role includes:

  • Working as part of a team, overseeing the running of laboratories and the science preparation rooms.
  • Finding out and following recommended safety procedures.
  • Preparing materials for class experiments, demonstrations or assessments.
  • Checking that all apparatus is working correctly prior to use and that materials have been prepared correctly.
  • Liaising with the teacher(s) concerned at the earliest opportunity in the event of any difficulties in their provision.
  • Equipping the appropriate laboratory with all the apparatus and materials for any practical work needed, setting up laboratory apparatus as requested by the teacher and checking that it functions properly.
  • Assisting in the classroom as required.
  • Tidying up wherever possible each laboratory after each practical, removing equipment and any materials that may be left over, and cleaning equipment as required.
  • Disposing safely of used chemicals.
  • Regular safety checks of equipment by inspection and using test equipment as required.
  • Supporting teachers in devising and making novel experiments and equipment resulting from developments generated by changes to the current curriculum.
  • Assisting with stock checks, orders and deliveries.
  • Use of IT in the organisation and smooth running of the science faculty.
  • Liaising/assisting other members of the science technician team as appropriate.


Additional Duties:


  • Work with other members of the Curriculum Support Team to contribute to the school improvement plan.
  • Undertake other duties that may reasonably be required by the Senior Science Technician.

About you

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a keen interest and proven track record of keeping up to date with current legislation and modern scientific laboratory techniques.
  • Have demonstrable familiarity with standard scientific nomenclature.
  • Have demonstrable familiarity with standard glassware and apparatus normally found in a science laboratory.
  • Be able to react knowledgeably in potentially hazardous situations.
  • Be an experienced IT user, preferably with Google products, and capable of the preparation and management of basic spreadsheets and databases.
  • Need to be organised and methodical, enthusiastic and adaptable.
  • Ideally have previous working experience within a School Laboratory.
  • Have Science A-Level(s) or equivalent are an essential requirement.
  • Be a graduate in a scientific field (desirable).
