Purpose of the job

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Research Scientist to join the team developing our mass-scale insect rearing processes. As a Research Scientist you will use your experience of generating and interpreting data to guide the team’s efforts as we seek cost efficient and high-quality rearing outcomes. You will focus on developing and testing new manufacturing processes and systems to enable the rearing of Fall Armyworm at larger scale than is currently being done by anyone, globally. This will involve a hands-on approach in a growing team, working closely with our engineering department to test, improve and validate designs and processes essential to deliver key Oxitec deliverables.

Note: Oxitec’s laboratories are “COVID-19 secure” per government guidelines and like most businesses, we are navigating the pandemic by prioritising health and safety. We are currently operating in two shift patterns (6:30-13:30 and 14:00-21:00). We will ask that the candidate aligns to this shift pattern for as long as the company deems it necessary.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a small team of technicians to execute required experimental and insect colony maintenance work;
  • Design experiments to interrogate the performance of our insects in new processes and equipment;
  • Interpret experimental data to steer design and testing of evolving systems using accepted statistical methods;
  • Work closely alongside the engineering to allow rapid feedback on their designs and prototypes;
  • Monitor and maintain large scale manufacturing equipment for the production of various insect species;
  • Carry out literature reviews to guide experimental testing;
  • Clearly communicate, in written, oral and PowerPoint formats, the outcomes of experiments and planned to the broader group to assure coordinated efforts;
  • Assisting with maintaining up to date health and safety records and writing and updating SOPs and risk assessments;
  • Training staff as required in line with training records;
  • Providing occasional weekend support as part of a rota within the R&D team.

Key Qualifications And Skills
  • Educated to BSc/MSc level or equivalent;
  • Experience working with animals/insect colonies is essential, specifically in insect mass rearing is desirable;
  • Knowledge of manufacturing environment and/or automated machinery is desirable;
  • Demonstrates an ability to communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders including management, engineers, scientists, and technical staff;
  • Must be diligent and organised, with data recording abilities and meticulous attention to detail;
  • Able to work independently and within a team;
  • Proficiency in R/R Studio and experience in using statistics is preferred;
  • Decisive and assertive with a driven and proactive approach;
  • Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility, thriving and being resilient in an environment of change and ambiguity.
