Job overview

The Vasculitis and Lupus research group is a dynamic team which conducts both commercial and investigator-led research into autoimmune diseases, particularly Lupus, Vasculitis, and Behçet’s disease.

You will assist in developing, supporting and promoting research within the Vasculitis and Lupus research group. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, and in accordance to Good Clinical Practice, HTA regulations, research governance and EU Clinical Trials legislation.

Main duties of the job

Assisting in identification of eligible study and clinical trial participants

Provision of information and support for patients/participants

Recruitment and informed consent

Patient treatment, including administration of study drugs, and follow-up

Co-ordination of study/trial sample collection, processing and storage

Data collection and entry according to specific clinical trial protocols

Qualifications

Essential criteria

    RGN Adult or RM with current NMC registration

Desirable criteria

    Clinical research qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

    Substantial experience of working with patients and their carers within clinical areas

    Experience in a relevant field within the NHS

    Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams

Desirable criteria

    Post registration experience at Band 5 or above in an acute clinical setting

    Experience of autoimmune disease and/or experience of working in a clinical research environment

    Experience of co-ordinating Ethics and regulatory submissions

    Experience of working with clinical and academic research teams

    Laboratory experience (including working with human biological samples)

Knowledge

Essential criteria

    Demonstrable knowledge of clinical research infrastructure in the UK; and of Research Government legislation & regulations

    Demonstrable knowledge of the role of the clinical research nurse; understanding the issues/process of gaining informed consent

    Basic knowledge of research methods

Desirable criteria

    Evidence of continuing professional development

    Understanding of the requirements of ICH Good Clinical Practice; possess current GCP Certificate

    Understand the structure, role & functions of RECs and R&D departments

Skills

Essential criteria

    Good communication written and verbal skills

    Ability to work independently but also able to operate effectively within multi-disciplinary teams and across professional disciplines

    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: ability to develop good working relationships with diverse study participants, healthcare professionals and external agencies

    Able to support participants through the informed consent process

    Ability to lead, motivate and develop junior staff

    Good organisational, time & project management skills: and able to plan, prioritise & co-ordinate work under pressure

    Good presentation skills

    Numerate with good IT skills; competent in standard PC packages (Windows, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access)

    Proven administrative skills with attention to detail

Desirable criteria

    Capable of writing reports and of presenting research related information to a wide audience

    Cannulation and venepuncture

Additional Requirements

Essential criteria

    Able to work flexible hours with occasional evenings (e.g. for study recruitment)

    Willingness to travel regionally and to occasionally nationally/internationally to attend investigator meetings.

    The ability to understand and behave at all times, towards patients, visitors and colleagues according to the Trust values of kind, safe and excellent.

Desirable criteria

    Desire to develop research career.
