The role as a Mechanical Engineer in Johnson Matthey will include designing, commissioning, and optimising pilot plants and bespoke process development equipment as well as site utility & infrastructure assets, spanning multiple Business Units across Teesside.
Your responsibilities:
  • Create and prepare innovative mechanical engineering designs and specifications for bespoke Research Engineering equipment to facilitate delivery of business-critical research and manufacturing programmes. Responsible for ensuring equipment designs meet site and statutory specifications.
  • Identify design solutions to complex problems and continuously improve the effectiveness & reliability of bespoke Research Engineering equipment.
  • Prepare test methods and schedules for compliance testing of new and existing research engineering and site utility equipment, including safety critical systems, to meet the requirements of company safety policies and legislative guidelines.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot non-optimal equipment performance and work alongside internal customers to design efficient and robust solutions.
  • Carry out and approve design calculations for mechanical equipment ensuring full compliance with all relevant codes, EHS standards and Life Saving Policies.
  • Collaborate with and provide technical expertise to project teams, technicians and internal customers during installation, commissioning, modification and troubleshooting of research engineering and site utility equipment.
  • Specify and procure equipment to support projects, preventative maintenance programmes and repairs, including preparation and control of single or multiple project budgets in the region of £100K.
  • Actively contribute to EHS and process safety, including hazard studies, safety audits and risk assessments.
  • Plan and prioritise own sections of engineering projects, including co-ordinating the tasks for technicians & contractors, and manage customer and employee expectations to deliver within time and budget.
Requirements for the role:
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience - Essential
  • Proficient in CAD (2D and 3D) - Essential
  • Demonstrable experience in a Mechanical Engineering role - Essential
  • Demonstrable experience of Mechanical Engineering at the pilot scale - Desirable
  • Experience in design / specification of mechanical components, including pumps, vessels, and pipe/tube fittings (preferably Swagelok) - Essential
  • Demonstration of customer focus and ability to respond to customer needs whilst achieving project and corporate objectives - Essential
