To carry out experimental characterisation and numerical simulation of multifunctional cementitious materials.

The research will involve the development and characterisation of cementitious materials that can perform multiple functions such as load bearing, carbon storage, self-healing and electricity generation using biological enzymes as precursors of cement-free binders. This will include biological growth of enzyme and characterisation of the resulting materials using analytical methods, mechanical testing, electrochemical spectroscopy, and numerical simulation.

You must have (or close to obtaining) a PhD in Engineering, Physics or Material Science or a closely related subject. A sound understanding of CO2 transformation into precipitated minerals and numerical simulation of carbonation using COMSOL is essential. To support the required mineral precipitation and growth, experience in biological enzyme is desirable. Experience in analytical methods for materials characterisation is also desirable. In addition, the candidate should be a good communicator being able to work as part of a team and in collaboration with industrial partners, with good inter-personal skills.

The position is effective from the 1st October 2022. You will join us on an indefinite contract however, the role remains contingent on external funding which, at this time is for 12 months in the first instance.
