This is an excellent opportunity to join a thriving Cambridge Based SME as a talented Research Assistant or Associate to join its rapidly growing scientific team.

The appointee will assist in running a busy experimental laboratory and will have specific responsibility amongst other duties, to contribute to developing and applying innovative assays for toxic oligomer measurements in protein misfolding diseases. They will conduct drug discovery research projects together with other members of the team and will utilise both the companys proprietary antibody platform and commercial antibodies. They will be contributing to the development and application of methodologies and establishing assays for demonstrating target engagement. The candidate will have a desire to play a role in discovering new treatments for debilitating diseases, whilst working in an innovative and fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Assist in designing and applying molecular biology, biochemical and biophysical assays for the direct measurement of protein oligomers that are generated during protein aggregation in protein misfolding diseases
  • Perform a range of antibody-based assays such as, ELISA, western blots, and imaging using a range of samples from in vitro, to cells and ex vivo
  • Contribute to the automation of such assays
  • Take an active role in the experimental design of new methods to support the activities of other teams as and when required
  • Have excellent communication and team-working abilities
  • Present data at cross-functional meetings and external conferences
  • Communicate concisely complex ideas and concepts to non-experts as well as to peers
  • Mentor and coach colleagues with less experience.

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience required

  • BSc and/or MSc in bioscience, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline at a leading academic institution, and/or relevant industry experience
  • Research expertise in the topic of protein misfolding and aggregation and experience working with amyloid-forming proteins
  • Previous experience developing assays for the mechanistic understanding of protein aggregation is highly desirable
  • Previous experience in protein purification is valuable
  • Experience in assisting to run a busy biophysical, biochemical or molecular biology laboratory (i.e. purchasing, maintenance of equipment stock, etc…)
  • Ability to understand complex problems and to design and implement novel solutions
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of collaborative research projects
  • Ability to communicate efficiently with both a technical and a non-technical audience
