We have a new opportunity for a Research Analyst for to join our Catalyst Technologies Sector based in Billingham. In this role you will provide a particle characterisation service to generate high quality, accurate data for customers. With an understanding of customer requirements, you will provide technical support on analytical methods and data interpretation and contribute to the operation of the multi-technique Teesside analytical group.

Catalyst Technologies (CT) is a market leader in the syngas value chain. It develops and supplies high-value, specialty process technology and catalysts for chemicals and fuels processing to enable our customers to operate efficiently, profitably and sustainably. With CT at the forefront of the transition to sustainable chemicals and fuels, the transition to net zero is creating exciting new opportunities in this sector.

Your responsibilities:
  • Ensure lab areas operate at the highest housekeeping and EHS standards. Undertake PIC duties as appropriate for particle characterisation labs and equipment. Ensure that all EHS documentation is in place and to a high standard.
  • Ensure adherence to procedures for high hazard activities (e.g. handling of dusty and hazardous materials). Contribute to creation of the team EHS improvement plan and ensure all personal actions from the plan are completed.
  • Proactively look to build deep technical expertise of Particle Characterisation techniques and maintain awareness of relevant scientific advances.
  • Provide a high-quality particle characterisation service (typically >1500 samples per year). Understand customer requirements and samples to provide guidance on analytical methods and data interpretation.
  • Operate a range of particle material characterisation equipment for measuring key catalyst characteristics. Carry out all necessary calibration and performance checks on the instruments. Ensure appropriate maintenance contracts and preventative maintenance systems are in place.
  • Use technical expertise to troubleshoot customer problems and to suggest experimental programs and solutions.
  • Host and train JM researchers/analysts and sponsored students in particle characterisation techniques.
  • Project manage installation and commissioning of new analytical equipment.
  • Ensure all reported work meets analytical Quality standards. Report data to customers with appropriate recommendations and error bars indicated.
  • Interact directly with customers of analytical service to understand their future needs and requirements.

Requirements for the role:
  • An undergraduate degree in physical sciences or equivalent industrial experience
  • Experience of working in a laboratory
  • A sound knowledge of the principles of modern analytical chemistry techniques
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively to different audiences
  • Pro-active and self-motivated with excellent planning and organisation skills
  • Possess a flexible approach to working with excellent attention to detail skills
