Working in some of the nation’s most spectacular places, come rain or shine, your love of the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that landscapes are beautifully presented and continue to take our visitors’ breath away.

The salary for this role is between £21,684 and £23,088 dependant on experience.

What it’s like to work here:We look after more than 5000 acres of countryside and 17 miles of the coastline around the Isle of Wight. This includes some of the best quality chalk grassland in the UK, home to early gentians, Adonis, chalkhill and small blues; ancient, coppiced woodland and semi natural woodlands, supporting populations of red squirrel and rare hoverflies; heathland where nightjars and Dartford warblers nest; coastal undercliffs with rare invertebrates such as the Glanville fritillary and wetland habitats supporting great crested newts.

  • What you’ll be doing:You’ll be working across the Island, our places are mostly Sites of Special Scientific Interest and includes the Island’s only National Nature Reserve at Newtown Harbour, (also a RAMSAR site and part of the wider Solent Special Protection Area and Special Area for Conservation), a natural estuary with extensive mudflats and saltmarsh designated for its wildfowl and wader populations, alongside ancient woodlands and unimproved meadows.
  • You’ll help care for our own flocks of Hebridean sheep and Old English goats that graze many of our places. We have 460 acres of re-wilded farmland, linking two of our most important SSSIs and we are looking to encourage wildlife to return to all our farmed landscapes.
  • You’ll be looking after our many Scheduled ancient monuments, including Neolithic and Bronze age burial mounds, iron age enclosures, Palmerstonian and WW2 defences.
  • Working as part of the countryside team across the Island, the emphasis of this new role is estate maintenance and habitat management, implementing our ambitious targets to make all our land rich in wildlife.
  • You could be doing such varied tasks as fencing, installing gates, bracken control, coppicing, scrub clearance or livestock husbandry and movement. The work will include biological monitoring, working with volunteers as well as occasional visitor engagement at events and community involvement. Occasional evening, weekend and Bank Holiday working will be a requirement of this position.

Who we’re looking forWith your practical ability and willingness to learn, and your endless passion for our work, you’ll help with the protection and care of habitats, wildlife and historic sites. Your passion will inspire others to love these beautiful places as much as you do. We want you to engage with visitors, making time to talk to them. As an easily identifiable member of the Ranger team, you’ll have the opportunity to create lasting memories for everyone. After all, your passion and dedication could fire the imagination that makes a visitor become a supporter for the rest of their life.
