We have an excellent opportunity in our Environmental Safety Group at Heysham 2 Power Station that might just be for you!The OpportunityAs a Radiological Protection Engineer, you’ll be part of the team responsible for delivering the required standards and processes in Radiological Protection and Discharge Standards/ Environmental Protection. This ensures the safe and reliable operation of the nuclear power plant in accordance with all regulations, licences and requirements of external and internal compliance organisations.Your focus will be on operational radiological protection and, following suitable training and development, you’ll be expected to take on the role of Accredited Health Physicist.Pay, Benefits And CultureWe can offer a competitive salary from £40,069 - £71,779, and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.   • Providing radiological protection advice in support of operations, maintenance and engineering activities
  • Reviewing outage programmes and developing detailed radiological protection plans for outages.
  • Providing technical advice and oversight of the site’s arrangements for the assessment of radiation doses, the management of radiological monitoring instrumentation, the management of protective clothing and equipment, for control of radioactive material and for radioactive material movement and transport
  • Developing and delivering radiological protection training; advising and mentoring other departments to increase their understanding of working safely with radioactive materials.
  • Contributing to the arrangements for the accumulation, storage and disposal of solid radioactive wastes
  • Contributing to the arrangements for the assessment of radioactive discharges to the environment and the associated environmental monitoring programme.
Throughout your work you will manage specifications, work instructions and other control documents to ensure environmental safety. You’ll take an active role in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of team business plans and budgets, working with others to satisfy business objectives within agreed quality management arrangements.Who You AreAs a minimum, you’ll have a relevant HNC (or equivalent) and a relevant degree may be advantageous. Ideally you should be able to demonstrate knowledge of (or show a clear capability to learn) statutory legislation relevant to nuclear power station operation, Site Licence requirements, Safety Case Management, Emergency Plan arrangements and work to high standards of nuclear, personal, environmental, radiological and industrial safety.You should be able to demonstrate the ability to make sound decisions and communicate those decisions with a view to improving nuclear safety and environmental and radiological safety in the workplace. The ability to pay attention to detail, applying a questioning attitude to verbal, numerical and written information is also paramount. You should apply the highest standards of safety in line with company and legislative requirements, identifying hazards associated with work activities and the working environment. Effective team values are also crucial, with effective influencing styles in achieving personal and team goals, able to build good cross-functional relationships and team working at all levels.You will be required to undertake a role in the emergency scheme, leading to appointment as an Emergency Health Physicist.
