The role of the Pupil Support Worker in school will be to provide a high standard of support to classes, groups and / or individual pupils in order to ensure effective learning and teaching experiences which meet the needs of all our children. The successful candidate will have a sound knowledge of child development and the capacity to build effective relationships with children, parents / carers, staff and partners. You will work collaboratively, as part of a forward thinking, dynamic team, displaying high quality interactions and developing nurturing relationships with all.

St. Mary’s R.C. Primary School is a large denominational school serving the community of Bathgate. The school roll is currently 377 pupils arranged in 15 classes and a nurture class. In addition to this there is a new nursery class which opened in April 2021 and is housed in a separate building within the school’s grounds. The nursery has staffing capacity for thirty four 3-5 year old children and ten 2 year old children, full day Monday - Thursday during term time, to support the Scottish Government requirement of 1140 hours of early learning and childcare provision. Currently we have 38 children enrolled in the nursery class. The school and nursery enrols pupils from a wide catchment area and our Pupil Equity Funding in session 2022/23 (including top up) amounts to £76,680.

The school is staffed by a Head Teacher, Depute Head Teacher, Principal Teacher, 18 Teachers (full and part time) and 1 full time Support for Learning Coordinator. Non Class Contact Time (NCCT) is currently delivered using 3 of these staff members who develop learning and teaching within the areas of STEM, P.E. and HWB. There are currently 9 Pupil Support Workers deployed at various stages across the school to support children with identified learning needs and to support whole school working. In addition to this, 2 Supervisory Assistants supervise and support children in the playground and hall and breaks and lunch time. We have a school Family Link Worker who support children and families in a variety of ways. The nursery is staffed by an Early Years Officer, 4 Nursery Nurses (full and part time) and 1 Pupil Support Worker. There is an Administrative Assistant and a Clerical Assistant.

The school works in partnership with St. Kentigern’s Academy and cluster primary schools as well as the Parish of St. Mary’s and St. Columba’s, the Parent Council, PTA and wider parent forum. St. Mary’s has a very good reputation within the local community and enjoys strong links with a number of local organisations. These partnerships strengthen our collaborative working and capacity for improvement

This position requires registration with the SSSC. The successful candidate will have six months from commencement in this post to register with the SSSC. If you are already registered with SSSC you will be required to add West Lothian Council to your account

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check prior to a formal offer of employment being made by West Lothian Council.
