The Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology at the University of Kent has an excellent opportunity for a Research Assistant to work on a project funded from the UK Darwin Initiative. The research project “Resurrection Island: enterprise, conservation and development around the Aral Sea” will run for 3 years from September 2021-August 2025.

Our project revolves around ‘Resurrection Island’: a large former island in the Aral Sea, now accessible from the Uzbek mainland. Our project will lay the basis for designating Resurrection Island as a new national protected area. In tandem, we will develop new sustainable small-scale income streams (including tourism) that enable residents to benefit from the conservation of Island biodiversity. Equally, we will put in place approaches with corporate partners for ensuring that regional industrial and infrastructure development result in ‘no net loss’ of biodiversity

The Research Assistant will be based at the University of Kent, UK. However, they will be expected to spend a significant proportion of their time in Uzbekistan – split between Tashkent and the project region (Karakalpakstan). The percentage of time spent in Uzbekistan is to be determined, but will be no less than 10% and no more than 50%.

We are offering this position on a full time, fixed term basis for 2.5 years from the end of 2021/start of 2022

As a Research Assistant, you will:

  • Join the project team on expeditions to collect survey data and carry out biodiversity monitoring
  • Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator collate, store, manage and analyse these data to support production of key project outputs
  • Collate and analyse secondary datasets available online; primarily on industrial development activity, local market information, and some satellite imagery data
  • Supporting (under guidance) the development of pilot alternative initiatives, protected area documentation, and corporate biodiversity action planning

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • BSc (or equivalent) in relevant discipline, although MSc is desirable
  • Quantitative statistical data and spatial data skills
  • Fieldwork/expedition experience
  • Wildlife conservation project experience
  • Excellent communication (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills
