UL Solutions Built Environment provides the highest level of technical knowledge, expertise and testing, inspection and certification, advisory and commissioning services to support our customers globally throughout the entire life cycle of their products and buildings.

UL Solutions plays a critical role and acts as a trusted partner to various stakeholders in the built environment and building products industry by knowing everything about every building, building regulation and requirement, fire equipment services and personal protective equipment by providing proactive insights on safe, secure and sustainable buildings, risk management solutions and tenant wellness and safety validations.

As our global footprint continues to spread across the world, we are looking for a Project Engineer with a focus on passive fire protection, to join our team in Telford, UK.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

You will autonomously manage execution and timely completion of engineering projects by analysing project scope and determining project specifications, establishing test programs for product investigations, and preparing reports for clients as part of the Built Environment business.

You will participate in the development of UL requirements, test methods, and test equipment.

You will exercise Project Handler Signature Authority as Project Handler of record responsible for opening, maintenance, completion, and closing of assigned new work engineering projects.

You may also exercise Review Signature Authority as assigned as Reviewer of record responsible for initial review, status review, and final technical review of all new work engineering projects.
  • Determine project scope, develop a preliminary plan of investigation, and determine project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analysing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction. Projects may include frequent travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites.
  • Initiate communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services. Follow up on contacts from clients. Communicate with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Act to address client concerns and to resolve client issues. Provide technical assistance to clients in reference to product inspection and follow-up services
  • Establish appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer’s information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements. Notify client of any areas in which the product is not in compliance with UL requirements or of any changes in project scope or specifications
  • Coordinate laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of Laboratory Technicians and support staff and establishing completion dates. Coordinate administrative aspects of project management.
  • Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports. Prepare Follow-Up Service Procedures and information pages
  • Integrate continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job
  • Resolve engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analysing and reporting on the acceptability of the variations.
  • Propose development of new and/or revised UL requirements. Develop special test methods and test equipment. Coordinate and/or performs File Reviews. May represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shows.

You should be willing to learn new technical concepts and be able to implement them. You will also have the following;
  • Proven Project Engineer experience within passive fire protection, specifically doors and hardware
  • University Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an ABET accredited program
  • Minimum 4 years of directly related work experience. Fire experience (testing, laboratory) / Passive fire protection (doors and hardware) valuable
  • Familiar with UKCA
  • Continuous improvement background
