Applications are invited for an exciting new opportunity at Bangor University to help further build capacity in the Management discipline within Bangor Business School.
The School is seeking a senior level academic appointment with teaching experience in HE and evidence of high level quality publications in the field of Management, as well as a successful record in significant grant capture. The successful candidate will be expected to lead and be part of influential national and international networks in the field of Management.

Candidates should be educated to PhD level in Management or related, be outstanding scholars with an excellent teaching and research record, and clearly defined research plans for the next REF. Successful candidates will be expected to provide leadership for an existing Business & Management Group and continue the growth of an attractive portfolio of management offerings that will continue to attract home and overseas students at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable for this post

Overview

The Business and Management Group at Bangor Business School encompasses a range of disciplines including Organisational Behaviour, HRM, Strategy, Marketing, Operations Management, Entrepreneurship, Knowledge Management and Tourism Management. The group is concerned with the innovative use of management approaches and techniques, resources and processes to enhance and develop organisations. We have received over £10 million in funding in recent years in leadership, social enterprise and green innovation.

The research active group is committed to knowledge generation, transfer and commercialisation and is very keen to enhance its teaching and research in areas related to sustainability. We focus upon private, public and not for profit sectors in order to develop understanding of key domains within the broader sphere of management.

We have popular undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Business Management. All of our Master’s degrees are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Management and our MBA Environmental Management is also accredited by the Institute for Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA). We have a strong track-record in developing newly qualified PhDs into successful academics.

Purpose of the Job

    To grow the Business & Management discipline within Bangor Business School and continue to build upon the School’s excellent reputation in teaching and research.
    To deliver quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels which engages students and will establish a record of teaching excellence at all levels.
    To conduct research of an international standard in a relevant field, with substantial evidence of quality and international peer recognition.
    To engage in grant capture activities and contribute significantly to national and international networks.
    To provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate students, including supervision of projects
    To perform administrative tasks effectively as designated by the Head of School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching duties will include:

    Planning, preparing and delivering lectures and seminars at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, responding effectively to a variety of student backgrounds, learning styles and class sizes including delivery of quality modules that attract, engage and retain students;
    Motivating students to proactive engagement in learning, and providing meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work within agreed time constraints;
    Examining and supervising / co-supervising students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of PhDs to completion and undertaking PhD examining in the UK and internationally;
    Keeping abreast of new professional, educational and related social, economic and technological developments;
    Ensuring that all students are provided with a supportive learning environment and provide advice and guidance to individual students as their personal tutor;
    Initiating and taking forward the development of new programmes that will appeal to a wider market;
    Building links with external agencies to provide work experience for students that could lead towards them gaining an additional professionally recognised qualification.
    The development of innovative and appropriate teaching and assessment techniques and skills, influencing the pedagogy of the subject;
    Lead curriculum development and design in line with market demands;
    Lead the review of modules and programmes and quality assurance mechanisms;
    Develop collaboration in terms of teaching across subject and disciplinary boundaries, maintaining and developing scholarly activities in line with University and College strategies.
    Providing specialist input to academic programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, ensuring their sustainability and excellence.
    Contributing to the Executive Education provision in the School.

Research duties will include:

    Leading a programme of research in Management that is internationally excellent in terms of quality and impact;
    Providing a major contribution to the development of research strategies at School and College level;
    Membership of national committees and editorial boards;
    Being a regular reviewer for respected international journals;
    Personal research, and/or collaborative research with colleagues in the School or across the College / University;
    Maintaining an active research programme leading to publications at a level of international excellence, while developing plans and applying for external funding;
    Being a mentor and guide for early career researchers, post-doctoral and doctoral students and other academic colleagues;
    Contributing to leadership of the research environment of the School through publication, conference contributions, research seminars and other research activities;
    Leading research groups / networks internally or externally to the School and / or University;
    Engaging in grant capture activities and contributing significantly towards the School’s capability to attract external research funding;
    Liaising with national research bodies (UK and Wales) to identify future research requirements;
    Generating impact of scholarly activity beyond academia;

    Disseminating and publishing results of research (as lead author) in high quality, leading, peer-reviewed publications appropriate to the subject area;
    Supervision of research students;
    Supervision of research staff;
    Managing own research projects, with an emphasis on research output, including publications of international excellence, of a quality and quantity to contribute positively and effectively to the esteem and resources generated by Research Assessments.

Administrative duties will include:

    Significant and substantial responsibility and contribution to management and / or strategy/policy formation at School, University and national level;
    Contributing significantly to the marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives;
    Leading external activities with the development of projects which create impact, working with communities, businesses and employers;
    Taking responsibility for specific programmes and modules as appropriate, working towards ensuring optimum module evaluation results;
    Maintaining accurate records and contributing to the working of the committee structures of the School and College;
    Contributing to the organisation of School conferences and/or research seminars.
    Liaising and working with other staff positively within the College and the University, and other bodies as required;
    Taking responsibility for an area of academically related administration at a senior level.
    Creating links with external agencies and employers to develop and deliver work placements;
    Undertaking other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School

Qualifications/Training

Essential

    PhD in Management
    A strong research track record in Strategic Management
    PGCertHE teaching qualification (or equivalent) and / or HEA Fellowship recognition (or minimum of 3 years substantial teaching experience for conversion to HEA Fellowship within 3 years of appointment).

Desirable

    Expertise or interest in Tourism Management or Human Resource Management
    Expertise or interest in Data Science or Data Analytics
