The Domesday Book. War time records. The Poll Tax Riots. Records of Public Inquiries. High Court judgments. These are just some of the 11 million items held by The National Archives. With a collection like this – the largest in the world – it’s essential we evolve and innovate as we build our digital archiving services. Keeping the Nation’s born-digital records safe and making sense of them for future generations is an awesome task.

About the role

Are you motivated by creating innovative digital products that exceed user expectations? Are you passionate about data and its potential to transform our services? If so, we would love to hear from you.

The National Archives has long history of delivering high quality, ambitious digital services to diverse audiences. We want to be at the forefront of creating innovative ways for our users to connect with our shared digital heritage. This is a key element of our ambitious vision to transform our services, ensure the Public Record thrives and survives, and open up access to 900 years of British history.

As the Product Manager for our Digital Archive data services, you will work with a multi-disciplinary Agile product team, which includes skills in data engineering, software development, business analysis, Agile delivery, cloud infrastructure operations, technical architecture and user research. You will provide leadership and direction for the Data Transformation and Enrichment service which is at the heart of the Digital Archive. You drive forward development of this service and create a suite of supporting data resources and interfaces.

You will be responsible for leading and shaping the direction of your product and for delivering maximum value to users while meeting the strategic aims of the business. You will be highly motivated to move the product forward and skilled at establishing goals and balancing priorities. You will create and communicate the product vision and roadmap and manage the product backlog effectively to ensure iterative delivery of high quality products at pace.

You will be working with a creative, motivated team who embrace challenge and look for opportunities to do things differently. This is a great time to join us.

About you

An experienced product manager with a strong track record, you will be adept at solving complex problems, defining goals and balancing competing priorities. You are an excellent communicator, who is able to see and communicate the wider impact of your work while also being able to get into the detail to make things happen. You will be comfortable working in a continuous learning environment, and at ease dealing with ambiguity and change.

Skilled at building trust, you will build effective relationships and motivate and empower your team to deliver. Most importantly, you will show that you have the will to drive forward improvements to our products and services.

Join us here in beautiful Kew, just 10 minutes’ walk from the Overground and Underground stations, and you can expect an excellent range of benefits, which includes an opportunity to join the Civil Service Pension Scheme along with flexible working, discounts with local businesses, wellbeing resources, an on-site gym, discounted rates in our on-site café, shop and staff bar.

This post is available full-time or part-time. Requests for part-time working are encouraged and will be considered taking into account at all times the operational needs of the Department. A combination of onsite and home working is available and applicants should be able to regularly travel to our Kew site.

We would particularly like to encourage applicants from backgrounds currently underrepresented in archives, including those who identify as Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT+), from Black, Asian and minority ethnic cultural backgrounds, those who are neurodivergent, and those with hidden or visible disabilities.
