The Role

Are you seeking an exhilarating opportunity to create an impact? Join our team and contribute to the advancement of fusion energy as a Principal Process Engineer. In this role, you will provide both technical expertise and project leadership for projects of significant importance or scale, shaping the direction of the organization and its collaborations with external partners. The Principal Process Engineer offers specialized knowledge and guidance in a complex field, managing and delivering major projects while leading multidisciplinary teams on enhancement programs, future fusion devices, and technology applications. Acting as a key authority in process engineering, they provide advice on technical solutions, designs, and critical plant operational matters.

In this role, you’ll lead the design of major fusion sub-systems from concept to detailed design for UKAEA’s facilities and future fusion devices. You’ll manage a project team of engineers, designers, and office personnel, work with Systems Engineers on tool selection, ensure designs are validated, and comply with international and fusion-specific standards.

  • Lead the technical delivery of process engineering solutions, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, codes, and site procedures.
  • Develop and execute the technical plan for each project, including resource allocation and task definition for design activities.
  • Identify technology gaps and propose research and development initiatives to manage project technical risks effectively.
  • Strategically focus on delivering process engineering to meet agreed milestones, while considering the project and organizational benefits.
  • Make timely critical technical decisions to advance design solutions, manage risks, and meet performance requirements, acting as a technical reference and arbitrator within the discipline.
Qualifications

Essential Requirements:
  • A relevant engineering degree (chemical, mechanical or science) or equivalent experience. 
  • Leading teams and supervising staff at varying levels.
  • Good working knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, heat and mass balances. 
  • Chartered status with a suitable professional institution. 
  • Experience with fusion-relevant process plant and unit operations and with working to design standards and design codes.
