We’re looking for a principal flood risk consultant with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in the rivers and coastal market, with experience in undertaking and leading on a range of projects for a variety of clients on projects relating to flood risk as well as water management. We are looking for someone to help support the growth of the team by strengthening our skillset and capabilities within this area.

The team is made up of Chartered Engineers and Environmental Consultants who boast a wealth of experience having worked in the field and office-based consultancy for many years. Royal HaskoningDHV has an extensive portfolio of clients ranging from private developers, national infrastructure projects through to public (Local Authority, Environment Agency) and other private clients within the Water market. We are currently focusing on expanding our Water Team.

As a global multi-disciplinary company, we have a growing portfolio in many sectors and would like to speak to those who have supported clients in the above-mentioned areas. We are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative individual experienced in engaging with clients and stakeholders at a variety of levels and who can actively expand our current portfolio of projects.

Responsibilities

Establishing a network of clients and suppliers, cultivating leads, building partnerships and securing a portfolio of work for yourself and others. Identifying opportunities for the development of new products and service lines. Proposal writing, including providing commercial and technical input to fees, scope and programme of works.

Lead the delivery of flood risk assessments, technical advice notes and Environmental Statement chapters, across multiple projects with varying size and complexity, to support our Client’s Development Consent Orders, Environmental Impact Assessments, and planning applications. Input to and review of Flood Risk Emergency Plans or similar flood warning plans.

Apply your technical knowledge to guide the production of Outline Surface Water Drainage Strategies including calculation of Greenfield runoff rates, attenuation volumes and suitable solutions for Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).

You will be required to work within multi-disciplinary consultancy teams to find solutions to complex and challenging problems whilst inputting and reviewing a variety of reports.

Communicating and liaising with key stakeholders including the Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities and Internal Drainage Boards.

Management of projects up to £500k, including resourcing and budgeting and providing guidance and mentoring to junior project managers to support their growth. Commissioning and managing sub-contractors / survey companies.

Focus towards continuous personal development through learning and obtaining feedback both internally and externally, where appropriate. Supporting and mentoring junior colleagues to support their growth and development.

Requirements

The successful candidate will be a motivated and enthusiastic professional with a minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience. The candidate should be innovative and a problem solver able to demonstrate the following:
  • Demonstratable knowledge of UK national policies including National Policy Statement(s) and those policies focused on flood risk, including NPPF, PPG, TAN 15 and SPP;
  • Strong technical ability in assessing flood risk for either private or public sector;
  • Strong commercial acumen and ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with clients;
  • Comprehensive report writing skills and delivery of presentations for a diverse range of audiences;
  • Ideally experienced in the production of surface water drainage strategies;
  • Experienced in project management for a variety of clients;
  • Previous experience of managing clients and budgets;
  • Previous experience of mentoring junior staff;
  • Competent user of GIS;
  • Exposure or ability to use TuFlow/HEC-RAS/Flood Modeller or similar;
  • Exposure or ability to use MicroDrainage/Causeway.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in subject(s) such as Flood Risk / Planning / Geography / Oceanography / Marine Science / Environmental Sciences or Engineering;
  • Ideally should be a chartered member of the ICE or CIWEM.
