Our Core Technology Team are looking for a Principal Data Platform Engineer who has the passion and determination to work across a broad cross-section of disciplines and technologies. Working collaboratively with other team members, you will help to improve the platforms and services that underpin data services and work to provide innovative capabilities that pull together the Team’s diverse sets of data and enable data driven decisions that drive performance. You will thrive on working in a fast paced and ever-changing digital environment where you can apply your passion for data to make a difference to the Team.

This role additionally involves coordinating the day-to-day priorities and availability of the Data Platform group and serving as the authority on technical aspects. Key Accountabilities of this role include:

Key Accountabilities
  • Collaborating with Business, Data and Solution Architects around BI, analytics and data engineering projects and implementing the best data platforms to fulfil the requirements.
  • Identifying and implementing opportunities for data integration across platforms and data stores, providing systems, message brokers, ETL pipelines, and data modelling / BI analysis to bring together data sources and empower the wider team.
  • Technical lead on implementation and operational activities to support a broad range of database technologies (for example MS-SQL, MongoDB, Oracle, InfluxDB, PostgreSQL, memcached), ensuring secure, high performing, scalable services to the business.
  • Instilling best practice and providing technical guidance to others in the team and advocating the best way to provide innovative technical solutions for modern data technologies (No-SQL, time-series, containers, automation), alongside traditional databases (SQL, Oracle).
Technical Skills And Experience
  • Detailed experience with data analysis and BI capabilities and platforms (e.g. PowerBI, Spotfire).
  • Detailed experience of implementing and managing various database technologies including SQL, NoSQL, time-series, message brokers, data warehouses, data lakes
  • Detailed experience with ETL and integration activities and toolsets, being able to make recommendations on the right tool for the right job and aligning with the data architecture.
  • Ideally, experience with underlying clustering and operating system implementation and support (Windows Server, Linux).
  • Ideally, experience managing and operating via command line utilities and working to improve automation and enlist modern practises (DevOps, CI/CD, Ansible, containerisation etc.).
  • Ideally, backed up by vendor certifications (e.g. Microsoft, Linux).
  • Experience of leading a technical or project team of some form would be advantageous but not essential.

  • A practical individual who is also comfortable strategising and dividing their time between project work, support, and maintenance, and able to work both independently and within a highly collaborative team.
  • Organised and initiative-taking, able to communicate clearly, and willing to take ownership and accountability for their work in current and future platforms and processes.
  • Keen to use intuition to perform deeper analysis of problems outside of initial skills and knowledge.
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced environment with continual demands and changing priorities.
  • Confident and with proven ability to execute operations and changes within an ITIL environment.
  • Calm under pressure and able to retain focus during difficult break-fix / downtime scenarios.
