We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, forward thinking individual who has a broad range of experience in clinical biochemistry. The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences is a welcoming and friendly workplace and the department benefits from excellent links with both specialist clinicians and general practitioners.

The successful candidate will work with the Clinical Biochemistry Team to deliver a high quality service to the Bassetlaw and Doncaster Health Districts which meet the needs of the hospitals, the General Practitioners and the community. On a daily basis the Team of four Clinical Scientists (2 Consultants and 2 Principals) offer the clinical and scientific support and advice to clinicians on the choice and appropriateness of biochemical investigations and their interpretation. This Principal role includes supporting the Consultant Specialty Lead with the clinical evaluation and performance monitoring of Clinical Biochemistry automated analysers situated on the two main hospital sites – Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) and Bassetlaw Hospital (Worksop). The post is therefore based at DRI but the successful candidate will need to work on the Bassetlaw site as required.

To apply for this post you must be state registered with the Health Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist (Clinical Biochemistry) and hold part 1 of the FRCPath by examination, or equivalent. Full support will be given to allow the successful candidate to continue their training.

Scientific

Contribute to the provision of an advisory and interpretative service. Participation in the Duty Biochemist rota for laboratory reporting will typically be for 2 days per week.

Assist the Consultant Clinical Biochemists in the organisation of a specialist area of the department in an economic and effective manner and contribute to the provision of a high quality service.

Be involved in the development of policies, procedures and work instructions to implement changes in legislation, professional guidelines, clinical practice and technology.

Assist in the selection, calibration and operation of new analytical instrumentation and methods and direct the validation and implementation of new methods and assays.

Education and training

Participate in the teaching and training of scientific and technical staff within the department.

Collaborate in the teaching of medical, nursing and other healthcare professionals.

Instigate and participate in research and development projects and clinical audit.

Professional

Undertake continuing professional development (e.g. Royal College of Pathologists CPD scheme or equivalent).

Keep abreast of the latest technical and scientific development and their applications in medical and associated fields.

The Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is currently one of five Trusts involved in the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Transformation Programme. The aim is to design a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients.
