Powertrain Integration Design Engineer

Brackley

At the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a group of passionate and determined people work to design, develop, manufacture and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and rising star George Russell.

The Team has set a new benchmark for Formula One success during the sport’s current Hybrid era, winning consecutive Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championships in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, and the Constructors’ Championship in 2021.

The Role:

As we look ahead to major regulation changes for 2026, an opportunity has arisen for a mechanical engineer to join the Powertrain Integration and Transmission Design Department at our Brackley Campus. Our group forms part of the Design Office at Brackley and is responsible for a number of key -performance and reliability differentiators of the F1 car - namely the gearbox, hydraulics, PU cooling systems, fuel system, pneumatics and exhausts.

This role would be ideally suited to ambitious engineer at an early stage of their career, who is looking to build experience on their journey to senior engineer and beyond. Our group is structured in a way that we can accommodate both those who wish to specialise in a single Powertrain area, or those who wish to gain exposure to a number of specialisms with time - thus providing excellent career progression opportunities to the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Technical ownership of powertrain design projects - from formative idea, to end of useful life.

  • Collaborate with our in-house machine shop, the external supply chain, inspection and quality departments to ensure we deliver the best value between performance, reliability and cost.


  • Develop relationships with technical partners to push boundaries and develop new capabilities.

  • Organise suitable containments for feedback that is generated during prove-out, at the race event, or during servicing.

  • Work closely with our colleagues at Mercedes High Performance Powertrains to identify, measure and deliver the best overall lap time solutions to the circuit.

  • Enact technology transfer to engineering activities outside of Formula 1 as part of our Applied Science programmes.

Candidate Profile

  • Previous considerable experience within an engineering application (can include a placement year).

  • Mechanical Engineering Degree or similar qualification at 2:1 level or above.

  • Able to demonstrate a solid level of first-principles understanding of mechanics, and problem-solving skills that give an ability to think on your feet.

  • Communicative and collaborative skills to deliver effective cross-departmental results.

  • Curious, committed to continuous learning, and ability to adapt quickly to change.

Advantageous (but not essential) Experience

  • Experience and enjoyment of any of the following specialisms would be beneficial:Gear and bearing design, hydraulic systems, thermodynamics, composite materials design/manufacture, additive layer design/manufacture, programming skills (e.g. Python).

  • Operation of a high-end CAD system – we use Dassault 3DX.

Please note: this is a full time role however we will consider a 4 day working pattern
