Photonics Systems Engineer

ROLE SUMMARY
We are currently looking for a Photonics Systems Engineer to join our Research & Development department based in Dunfermline. You will contribute towards the development of next generation ophthalmic imaging devices. This will include designing, specifying, integrating and verifying complex imaging systems to allow the timely delivery of innovative and world leading products that delight the customer, which have been efficiently developed in a robust and supportable manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Imaging system integration & implementation of prototype imaging systems.
  • Develop and document system requirements, design analysis, system design and system architecture and conduct in-depth review.
  • Analyse and verify system performance through simulation, test, and measurements.
  • Working with the business stakeholders to develop the system strategy to support product and service delivery with robust, supportable products in an efficient manner.
  • Working with the development leadership team to scope the timely delivery of product solutions against project requirements.
  • Communicate design intent and operational workflow of designed solution to development and product engineering staff.
  • Proactive participation in development team activities to drive progress.
  • Reviewing design output for adherence to architectural principals.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of existing product range through design analysis and applying innovative technology solutions.
  • Keep abreast with the latest relevant research, industry standards, regulations and technology developments to maintain professional competency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics.
  • At least 3 years of research experience in industrial R&D or academia.
  • Experience developing and integrating complex optical imaging systems.
  • Broad understanding of optical systems, opto-electronics, opto-mechanical and software driven hardware.
  • Competence and experience in hardware interfacing and data processing (Matlab, Labview, C#, C++ or other programming languages).
  • An ability to work within tight deadlines and manage time effectively.
  • Strong written/verbal communication and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s or PhD in Engineering or Physics (will be counted towards research experience if the course was based on research).
  • Experience in the field of Optical Coherence Tomography.
  • Demonstrable systems engineering and system architecture experience within a commercial environment (likely tools: UML, Simulink, Visio).
  • Previous experience of medical products or instrumentation development preferred.
  • Experience in areas such as Software Applications, Embedded systems, Robotics, Data Acquisition and Digital Signal Processing.
  • Experience in defining system requirements specifications and development and integration of complex products.
  • Experience in medical device development and good documentation practices.
  • Experience in image processing.
