An exciting opportunity has become available to join our Integrated Health and Social Hospital Avoidance Team, Contact Cares.

St. Helens and Knowsley NHS Teaching Hospitals are looking to recruit 2 experienced, compassionate, highly motivated, skilled and committed community phlebotomists to join our Heath and Social Care integrated Team.

This phlebotomy service will collect urgent blood samples from patients in a skilled, safe and timely manner from a variety of referral sources.

The successful candidate will be required to travel to an Intermediate Care Setting and patients own homes across St. Helens. This will be on a rota basis, with weekend working. 2 Posts available 37.5 hours per week over 5 days.

Requests will be for unplanned hospital avoidance bloods and therefore may be unplanned. We are a response service.

Transport samples to the agreed Laboratory reception within an agreed time frame.

To actively participate in team meetings and to inform effectively on shift handover.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as part of a team but to also act autonomously within the clinical/ community setting.
  • Promote good public relations with patients.
  • Responsible for personal effective time management and organisational skills. Work without direct supervision reporting to the Clinical Team Manager.
  • Responsible for taking reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others.
  • Safe collection of routine/urgent venous blood samples from patients as requested by a number of professionals including doctor’s andor nurses in line with Trust Policy.
  • Prepare blood samples for transport ensuring stability and safety. To make informed decisions relating to patient care and safety. To comply with identified operational procedures regarding blood sample collection.
  • To ensure that own phlebotomy equipment is cleaned thoroughly and restocked with consumables by completion of duty.
  • To work within the domiciliary service and in the Intermediate Care Setting around the Borough of St. Helens.

  • Report any complaints to the Shift Coordinator and participate in any investigation as necessary
  • Safe collection of routine/urgent venous blood samples from patients as requested by a number of professionals including doctor’s andor nurses in line with Trust Policy.
  • Prepare blood samples for transport ensuring stability and safety.
  • To make informed decisions relating to patient care and safety.
  • To comply with identified operational procedures regarding blood sample collection.
  • To adhere to the Trust’s Health and Safety at Work Policy.
  • To ensure that own phlebotomy equipment is cleaned thoroughly and restocked with consumables by completion of duty
  • Act as a positive role model presenting a professional appearance by ensuring uniform is worn correctly, it is clean and tidy and the dress code policy is adhered to.
  • To work in all Phlebotomy clinic’s and within the domiciliary service and in the Intermediate Care Setting around the Borough of St. Helens
  • Maintain high level of competency in all required techniques

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 2 or be willing to study towards
  • Educated to GCSE level in English and Maths/equivalent qualification/ Experience

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates an ability to be able to pass the phlebotomy competency assessment
  • Previous Phlebotomy Experience
  • Must have the ability to put patients at ease and remain calm in an emergency situation
  • Ability to work as part of a team
Desirable criteria
  • Full understanding of the role of a phlebotomist
  • Have previous experience working with the general public on a one to one basis
  • Previous experience working in a healthcare setting

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good interpersonal skills and flexible approach to work
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and willing to learn new skills

Other

Essential criteria
  • Ability to travel to various Hospital, clinic and domiciliary locations by own car/assisted driver
