As part of the Pan Mersey Collaborative for International Recruitment, an exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 highly motivated individuals to join the Clinical Education Team within St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The role of Clinical Education Support Tutor is required to support the preparation of internationally recruited nurses to successfully complete their NMC Part 2 Test of Competence OSCE.

The Pan Mersey Collaborative has developed an OSCE training Hub to prepare international recruits to complete their OSCE and join the NMC register. The Hub comprises of Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital, Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals, St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals & The Walton Centre NHS Trusts

This is a fixed term/secondment opportunity for 12 months.

Please note- it is the applicants responsibility to seek authorisation from their current manager to be released for the secondment before a formal application is made.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should have demonstrable experience in the planning and delivery of clinical based education, as well as experience of supporting internationally recruited nurses

Applicants will need excellent organisational skills, be self-motivated and be a committed team player. They should also have excellent communication and decision-making skills and work well under pressure.

The successful candidate will hold an appropriate professional qualification and have educational experience. Previous experience in the development, delivery and evaluation of education would be an advantage.

Based at Vortex House in Wavertree, the post holder will be expected to work across all the host Trusts to support international recruits whilst on clinical placements

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

KEY DUTIES

  • Supporting the induction of newly appointed international recruits into the OSCE preparation programme.
  • Supporting the development, co-ordination, evaluation and implementation of OSCE preparation programmes for the international nursing workforce including the development and testing of support materials
  • Developing the quality of the learning environment for international recruits across the host trusts, determining interventions necessary to support those staff meet the required learning outcomes.
  • Working with managers/service leads of newly appointed international recruits within host trusts as part of the Pan Mersey Hub, to identify any additional support requirements including pastoral support and work with these leads/mentors to create personal development plans related to the role of the appointee and agree deadlines for completion as and when required.
  • Support the development of clinical practice supervision and support structures for international recruits whilst on clinical placement as part of the OSCE preparation programme
  • Undertaking Quality Assurance visits across the organisation in relation to the workplace development of internationally recruited staff.
  • On successful completion of the Part 2 Test of Competence examination, support the transition of the international recruit into the Band 5 workforce, in conjunction with the Preceptorship leads for each host organisation.
  • Work in partnership with the NMC and the regional OSCE Test Centres to ensure OSCE preparation is in line with current UK practice and meets the requirements for registration

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the structure, design and facilitate the delivery of learning opportunities for international recruits as part of the OSCE preparation programme
  • Produce and maintain a portfolio of education in practice activity within service area(s). For example, structured professional learning activities, teaching packages
  • Support the development, implementation and review of education in practice learning environments for international recruits.
  • Act as an expert resource/ Champion of Learning in practice, supporting managers to ensure the delivery of a high quality learning experience for staff appropriate to their role.
  • Ensure communication channels are used appropriately to facilitate the flow of information between internal and external partners.
  • Ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times in conjunction with organisational policies
  • Collaborate with service managers to ensure academic rigor in practice learning is maintained; learning outcomes can be met, and are aligned with NMC requirements for initial entry to the nursing register.
  • Continuously monitor theory & practice learning activities against quality assurance standards enabling on-going enhancement of the learning experience for internationally recruited staff.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and support managers in the delivery of practice based education action plans for international recruits
  • Keep up to date in research and development relevant to education in practice and the clinical learning environment.
  • Develop and maintain up to date and accurate records and live registers of those staff undertaking development in the practice setting as part of the OSCE preparation programme
  • Develop a process to inform and enable ‘shared evidence’ and format to enhance the responsiveness and delivery of a single Quality Assurance process.
  • Monitor numbers of failing learners, and complaints to highlight trends and inform action planning. Liaise with the Clinical Education Support Team Nurse Lead, Ward Managers and Education Links across the host organisations, to develop appropriate action plans to support the failing student
  • Provide pastoral support to international recruits
  • Liaise with Information Service departments within host Trusts, including Library Services, to inform resource requirements and widen access to facilities for international recruits

TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSBILITIES

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of any practice learning experience for international recruits, recommending any changes and improvements.
  • Work with colleagues in the wider clinical education team to develop innovative educational opportunities to support the international recruits in areas such as simulation and multi-professional learning
  • Collaborate with service leads across the host trusts to align placement learning and operational experience to learning outcomes.
  • Network locally, regionally and nationally with peer group to support the sharing of best practice.
  • Work closely with the wider clinical education team to ensure classroom based OSCE preparation is aligned to placement learning.

GENERAL DUTIES

  • To observe the provisions of and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.
  • To actively participate in the annual performance review to identify personal development needs
  • To attend Trust Statutory and Mandatory training sessions as required and any other training courses relevant to the post.
  • To fully comply with the relevant sections of the Health and Safety at Work Act. They must also understand and implement St Helens and Knowsley Hospitals NHS Hospitals Trust “Statement of Policy on Health and Safety at Work” and the Trust corporate “Health and Safety Policies and Procedures”. You are required to follow all applicable rules and procedures relating to Health and Safety at Work and to take all responsible precautions to avoid actions.
  • To be aware of the confidential aspects of the post. To keep up to date with the requirements of information governance; undertake mandatory training and follow Trust policies and procedures to ensure that trust information is dealt with legally, securely, efficiently and effectively.
