Principal Purpose of Post

The Technician is responsible to the Senior Performing Arts Technician for technical services relating to productions, performances, and live events in the centre, and for the maintenance and technical servicing of MAC’s Performing Arts Studios. The Technician is also responsible, as necessary, for contributing to arrangements for the servicing of MAC promotions off site.


The key objectives of the post are:

  • To administer and service the technical requirements for events in MAC’s formal and informal spaces.
  • The safe operation and maintenance of MAC’s performing arts equipment.
  • To oversee the technical requirements and maintenance of the Theatre, Hexagon Theatre, Foyle Studio, Arena, music studios and performing arts studios.
  • To assist in the provision of effective production management for ‘in house’ productions and co – productions with external companies / artists.


Responsible For

Casual employees within the Department and a working liaison with artistic producing teams, associate artists, presenters and visiting companies.


Key
Responsibilities

The technical duties of this post include the entire spectrum of practical theatre crafts. It includes a variety of art and entertainment forms, conferences, seminars, and other such activities as are promoted by or at MAC in the Centre’s performance spaces and occasionally outside MAC. In particular, it involves work with:

  • Stage scenery, equipment and design
  • Lighting and lighting design
  • Sound design
  • Audio visual equipment


Servicing & Operation

  • To ensure the highest standards of presentation for all MAC’s work.
  • To liaise and communicate effectively, ensuring a complete overview of MAC’s events.
  • To contribute to the planning and implementation of live events including, but not limited to: the recruitment, induction, training, supervision and deployment of non-core and freelance technicians and work placements.
  • To follow established safe working practices in the pursuance of duties and adhere to MAC’s Health and Safety policy.
  • To ensure that visiting companies, artists, and technicians under the post holder’s support and supervision follow established safe working practices in the pursuance of duties and adhere to MAC’s Health and Safety policy.
  • To contribute to the maintenance and development of MAC’s Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities and Customer Service Policies and assist in maintaining and developing systems for advice, guidance and monitoring as required.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Technical Resources, Learning & Participation producer and Tutors, to maintain efficient studios, ensuring the acquisition, maintenance of equipment, instruments and materials for projects and for the education programmes.
  • To contribute to MAC’s learning & participation activities as appropriate through technical workshops in conjunction with MAC’s producing team.
  • To develop and maintain key contacts and good working relationships with:
  • A wide range of artists, companies, producers, educational & training institutions and agencies.
  • A wide range of professionals, general public and voluntary sector users of MAC’s facilities.
  • In conjunction with the staff at MAC, to ensure that the Centre works as an effective and welcoming base for performing arts activities and that facilities and services are appropriately provided.
  • On occasions to provide technical assistance on behalf of MAC to external agencies.


Technical Equipment Maintenance

  • To contribute to the management and development of technical resources in respect of equipment, materials and personnel.
  • To identify needs for all events for which s/he is responsible, ensuring that all activities are undertaken within and observe MAC’s established procedures and systems.
  • To maintain and repair the equipment within the Department’s control, or recommend when outside assistance may be required. To maintain and develop dance, music and theatre resources available to MAC.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Technical Resources to order and hire materials, distributing as necessary and keeping accurate records.
  • To ensure routine cleaning and tidying of Studios and Stage spaces, and ensure the maintenance of safe working environments.


In House Production / Co-Production Management (in conjunction with the Senior Performing Arts Technician and Head of Technical Resources)

  • Arrange and supervise any transport and storage necessary for productions.
  • To liaise with the artistic team to ensure effective communication and realisation of productions.
  • Supervision of casual technicians and freelance staff.


General

  • To participate in training and development activities as required and to assist with the training and development of colleagues as appropriate.
  • Undertake any other duties which may be required from this post.

Experience


Essential

  • At least 2 years as a Performing Arts Technician in a similar venue
  • Ability to lift and carry awkward and/or heavy loads
  • Working at height
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team

Desirable

  • Touring productions
  • Working with emerging artists and young people
  • Current driving licence


Specific Knowledge


Essential

  • Current theatre equipment & processes

Desirable

  • Audio-visual equipment, including digital media
  • Current Health & Safety (including risk assessments)


Practical Skills


Essential

  • Lighting and/or Sound design
  • Lighting rigging and operation
  • Sound rigging and operation
  • Set construction/ basic carpentry
  • Ability to fault-find damaged stock, identify and execute solutions for technical equipment
  • Relevant administrative skills
  • Basic Computer Skills
