Job Introduction

This role sits in Route Services, a business area that has been created to supply services to the routes in the safest, most cost-efficient and effective way, enabling them to benefit from economies of scale and optimised national resources.

The role will provide 24/7 Tier 2 process based technical investigations to identify and resolve the root cause reason of service failure or performance degradation of telecommunication services to enable Network Rail Telecom (NRT) to deliver customer agreed levels of telecommunication service availability and reliability in line with OLA/SLA.

The Network Rail Telecom (NRT) team is responsible for operating all of NRT’s telecoms assets and networks. This responsibility includes handling asset life cycles as well as the development, delivery and support of outstanding telecommunication networks and services.

NRT transports data between A and B enabling Network Rail to run operationally both on the railway (signalling, customer information systems, CCTV cameras etc.) and as a business (desk phones, mobile devices, data connections etc.).

NRT is also playing a key role in the realisation of our digital railway aspiration which requires huge amounts of data to be handled securely for it to work.

Main Responsibilities

Working a 24/7 shift pattern, you shall conduct administrative and complex technical activities to progress complaints and network alarms, working directly with remote management platforms and field-based maintainers to restore service and resolve technical failures within agreed operational service agreements, in line with the ITIL Framework and mandated Network Rail standards, highlight safety related failures for further processing. You shall conduct administrative and technical activities to support the successful delivery of planned work for both operational failures and Investment Project activities. You shall coach and mentor technicians to conduct event management of complaints and alarms presented on remote management platforms and provide technical support to field-based maintainers. Of paramount importance, you shall lead by example to foster a harmonious working environment that is diverse, inclusive, and respectful to maintain team cohesion and deliver world class service in a very challenging environment.

What will you be doing?

  • Monitoring and managing the entire Network Rail IP and Data estate.
  • Responding to alarms in a timely fashion, raising tickets and providing analysis.
  • Supporting the incident management process, escalating where required.
  • Reviewing the quality and performance of IP/data related assets and propose corrective action as required.
  • Carrying out approved change requests relating to the operational management of the IP network.
  • Checking and verifying configurations of router and switch hardware within the event management arena.
  • Maintaining Network hardware configuration, supporting approved IOS updates where applicable.
  • Implementing and controlling incident management facilities.
The Ideal Candidate

What essential skills and experiences are required?

  • Relevant Degree, or able to demonstrate equivalent competence.
  • CCNA certification. Knowledge of Cisco Routers, Switches and Firewalls.
  • Substantial IP Network Engineering or Operations experience.
  • A detailed understanding of the maintenance of IP network assets.
  • A good knowledge of the relevant technical, security, safety and performance standards.
  • Knowledge of other vendor IP equipment, Cisco Prime, ASA & Juniper firewalls, Protocols (MPLS), VRFs and layer 2/3 VPNs.
  • Understanding and experience of railway infrastructure maintenance.
  • Experience of undertaking engineering assurance activities, including competence assessment.
  • Willing to work in a 24/7 shift pattern.

Package Description

Contract Type: Permanent

Working Hours:this role is shift based. You will work 18, 12 hour shifts over a 6-week cycle which is currently favoured by existing team members. Please only apply for the role should you live within a 60 minute commute of the primary location specified. Due to the role being shift based we have regulations to follow to manage fatigue.
