Main description

A four- year academic and on the job apprenticeship to achieve the Food and Drink Multi-skilled Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship level 3. This is a permanent role, so on completion the apprentice would be expected to move into the shift engineering team.

YOU’LL MAKE CONTRIBUTIONS THAT MATTER BY COMPLETING…

A four- year academic and on the job apprenticeship to achieve the Food and Drink Multi-skilled Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship level 3. This apprenticeship also consists of:

  • City and Guilds Level 3 Maintenance Engineering (Electrical and Mechanical)
  • BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
  • Award in Food Safety level 3, and Principles of HACCP based Food Safety level 2
  • Included in the 4 years is residential engineering training at the Training Provider, 20 weeks in year 1, 16 weeks in the second year, and 10 weeks in the third year. The fourth year is spent consolidating learning and preparing for the End Point Assessment
  • Access at our affiliated Training Provider to the latest technology in a purpose-built training facility equipped with the very latest machinery and process control systems
  • Potential to study to a higher level e.g. HNC or Degree on successful completion

What happens after you complete the apprenticeship?
On successful completion, typically our apprentices will move in to the shift engineering teams.

As part of the engineering team you will be responsible for maintaining and improving the performance of all plant and equipment to achieve maximum machine availability targets. Through both planned preventative maintenance and reactive breakdown repairs you will work to minimise disruption to production targets, whilst ensuring that all equipment adheres to relevant legislation and so that a safe working environment is maintained at all times for yourself and other colleagues.

  • 3 GCSEs to include Maths and English language at Grade C/level 5 and above or equivalent
  • One A level or equivalent vocational qualification would be desirable but not essential
  • A keen interest in developing a career within Engineering and the food industry

Entry requirements

  • 3 GCSEs to include Maths and English Language Grade C/level 5 and above or equivalent
  • One A level or equivalent vocational qualification would be desirable but not essential.

Skills required

  • Good communication skills – verbal & written
  • Computer literate
  • Good sense of team work

Personal qualities

  • Ideal students will be motivated with a keen interest in engineering and the food industry, inquisitive and willing to learn
  • A level of maturity to deal with balancing college life with work life
  • Overall they must be prepared to commit to a 4 year period of study and a lot of hard work!

Training to be Provided

  • Food and Drink Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship at level 3, with end point assessment of skills/knowledge
  • Diploma in Food and Drink Engineering Maintenance at level 3
  • Award in Food Safety and HACCP at level 2
  • Integrated technical study and work based learning
  • Additional modules specific to the food industry
  • Focus on skills in innovation, influencing, leadership and motivation
  • On completion of your apprenticeship you will qualify for membership to the Institute of Technical Engineers

Things to consider

The working environment within the site can be noisy with extremes of temperature and the work involves heavy lifting and manual handling, but don’t be put off, we provide all of the necessary protective equipment and our teams pride themselves in their standards of health and safety.

Future Prospects

Year 1 apprentice salary - £9,500/year Year 2 apprentice salary - £18,200/year Salary increases will continue in year 3 and 4 as you progress through the program. On successful completion of the four year apprenticeship, you will be offered the opportunity to move into a role in the local engineering team or apply for any other vacant engineering role in the wider group. All of our engineers have accountability for maintaining and improving a whole range of equipment and associated processes with real accountability for driving efficiency and reliability. Starting salaries for qualified engineers are approximately £35k per annum. Our qualified apprentices are highly valued at our sites and many progress further in their careers with us with opportunities to progress into supervisory and management roles.
