Renfrewshire Council is committed to tackling the causes and effects of homelessness and works actively to help prevent people becoming homeless wherever possible. The Time to Mend Service provides housing options, advice and mediation to young people and their families with the aim of working together to prevent young people becoming homeless.

As the mediator for the Homelessness Prevention Team you will work alongside the Youth Homeless Prevention Officer to provide mediation predominantly to young people and their families. Duties include meeting with young people and their families on a one to one and face to face basis, assessing cases suitable for mediation, helping to facilitate a negotiated agreement between parties, monitoring cases and liaising with staff, external agencies and clients.

It is essential you have previous relevant experience of working with young people and families including assessing, organising and delivering mediation on a one to one basis and working with the public in their own homes. You must be an excellent communicator with young people and families and be able to work collaboratively with clients, colleagues and stakeholders whilst maintaining a high level of client confidentiality and objectivity. You must have the ability to deal with all types of people in difficult and stressful situations and understand the issues that affect young people and families and might lead to homelessness.

You will be required to work flexibly out with normal office hours and from various locations using the council’s WorkSmart facilities in order to provide client access to mediation.

An accredited certificate in mediation skills working with young people and families e.g. SARCO or Certificate in Counselling (NC Level) is desirable as is experience of counselling, problem solving and current good practise in homelessness prevention interventions.

A driving licence transport is also desirable.
