Job Purpose

To work alongside the Transport Manager to ensure the smooth running of an in-house transport operation running from five busy depots nationally. Consisting of more than 50 HGV’s, over 30 dedicated drivers, an in-house maintenance team and several external service providers.

The transport department organise all movements of our rental and sales generators and associated equipment using internal and external haulage

Successful candidate will need to have a transport industry background and deal with the day-to-day management of drivers and fitters, assist and support transport schedulers and management at all depots and work with our busy rental operations department to ensure equipment is in the right place and delivered/collected at the right time.

Key Tasks & Main Duties

  • Support Transport Manager with all aspects of the Transport function, ensuring all company vehicles and drivers comply with all relevant legislation.
  • Liaise with transport engineers, ensuring all vehicle maintenance carried out in a timely & cost-effective manner.
  • Work with and manage Bristol Scheduler to programme delivery and collection of hire equipment using in-house transport fleet and external transport or agency drivers where applicable. And provide assistance to our other depot staff with their own scheduling requirements
  • Work with Vehicle Workshop Foreman to programme and book MOT’s, ADR tests, Crane tests etc as required and ensure all documentation is in order and compliant.
  • Collate, analyse and manage driver data – daily walkround checks, defect reports, Working Time Records, POA etc to ensure ongoing compliance
  • Manage Driver availability – holiday bookings, Driver on call rota, recruitment etc
  • Work with third party transport providers to supplement in-house capabilities as required
  • Troubleshooting transportation requirements as required.
  • On a rota basis, provide out of hours phone support to our On Call managers
  • Liaise with specialist teams such as our HS2 Operations department delivering specialised solutions required for compliance with this and other projects/contracts
  • Comply with the Company Health & Safety Policy, including carrying out general housekeeping to ensure work areas are kept tidy.
  • Comply with all aspects of the company ISO 9001:2000 procedures, proactively contributing to the company’s continuous improvement programme.

Skills & Experience Required

Essential

  • Transport Manager’s CPC Qualification (or working towards) – Essential
  • Good working knowledge of transport legislation and compliance requirements (Operator Licensing, Driver’s Hours Rules, European Working Time Directive etc) – Essential
  • exceptional organisational and communication skills required - Essential
  • Proven ability to manage people effectively and work with colleagues at all levels – Essential
  • Ability to multi- task and work well under pressure - Essential
  • Flexible working attitude – Essential

Desirable

  • Strong iT skills and being able to use MS Excel - Preferred

Monday – Friday 08:00-17:00 with 1 hour for lunch and 2 x 15 minute breaks which are unpaid

Saturday mornings on a rota basis (typically 1 in 3) 08:00 – 12:00 midday

Provision of out-of hours phone assistance to trouble-shoot issues which cannot be dealt with by On-Call Manager etc (typically 1 week in 3)

The Nature of our work requires CRB checks to be carried out and any offer is dependent on satisfactory clearances and references being obtained.
