CONSULTANT IN TRAUMA AND ORTHOPAEDICS

SPECIALISING IN HIP SURGERY

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Hip surgery. The applicant should be trained in general orthopaedics and traumatology and should have significant experience and fellowship training in hip arthroplasty surgery, and an interest in lower limb trauma. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to develop their skills and interest in the field of hip arthroplasty surgery and will have the opportunity to lead the team’s responsibility for specialist hip trauma, and in innovate elective practice. The appointee will join a friendly, supportive team specialising in hip surgery.

The Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre at the RD&E has a long history of orthopaedic innovation and excellence. It is an academic department with significant subspecialty expertise and it has strong links with the University of Exeter and its Medical School. The present opportunity arises as result of the Devon Accelerator programme, which aims to restore and enhance elective care in the region post COVID-19. This work includes development of the Nightingale Hospital Exeter for elective work, and it is envisaged that this will be the first stage of a project that will result in a dedicated, protected elective orthopaedic facility.

The Exeter Hip Team has an excellent reputation locally, nationally and internationally for the high standards of its clinical work, for teaching and for quality research. Results from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales consistently demonstrate that the Exeter Hip Unit is a positive outlier for revision rates and patient reported outcomes. The Team manages a wide range of hip conditions including young adult hip problems, sports injuries, early and advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, revision surgery and complex lower limb trauma and infection.

The current team includes four consultants, one associate specialist, three senior fellows, one specialist registrar, one extended scope physiotherapist and one surgical care practitioner.

The Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust is a Teaching Hospital based in the historic cathedral city of Exeter in the heart of the South West of England. As such it enjoys a wealth of sporting and cultural resources along with access to the many beaches of Devon and Cornwall and the open moorland of Exmoor and Dartmoor.
