Job Description


This role is part of the Together Group Legal team and is responsible for proactively managing a varied legal workload with a particular focus on TCFL related legal issues, including litigation activity, recoveries and enforcement.

As a Legal Counsel you will be working closely with the Head of Litigation, Senior Legal Counsel and other members of the litigation team, they will help determine and implement the right strategic approach on managing the back book by conducting security reviews, advising on our recovery strategy, issuing statutory demands and identifying/management of potential negligence, title insurance claims and other litigation. The Legal Counsel will work closely with external solicitors but will also manage cases in house.

As a Legal Counsel, we are looking for someone to:

  • Providing strategic support to the business (with a particular focus on commercial lending) by providing high quality, commercially focused insolvency and restructuring advice, advising on contentious disputes and providing account level support for the recovery and enforcement of impaired debt
  • Proactively managing a varied caseload, by providing timely commercial focused advice in order to improve the level of recovery and reduce the time to recover
  • Proactively managing all stages of litigation from pre-action through to trial, including drafting witness statements, defences and other Court documents for claims
  • Supervising and mentoring junior members of the team
  • Conducting case analysis of claims and preparing succinct summaries of key information
  • Conducting security reviews across portfolio accounts and advising on recovery strategies
  • Progressing recovery action, including issuing statutory demands, insolvency petitions, claims for monetary judgments and negotiating settlements
  • Instructing and overseeing external legal suppliers and LPA receivers
  • Presenting regular MI and trend analysis on claims impacting the Group
  • Working closely with other members of the legal team and other senior stakeholders and other members of the Legal team on strategic approach to legal issues
  • Working closely with other teams across the Group, including Operational, Customer Complaint, Risk and Compliance teams
  • Over time, expanding role to develop additional responsibilities in different areas of law affecting the Group

Qualifications


Essentials:

  • Insolvency and restructuring experience
  • Experience of enforcing security
  • Strong drafting and knowledge of civil procedure rules
  • MI collation and trend analysis
  • Highly efficient, organised and pragmatic
  • Ability to analyse presented facts and succinctly summarise key points and factors
  • Good communicator at all levels; upwards, downwards and with business stakeholders
  • Positive team player
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work to deadlines
  • Desire to expand skill set and experience into additional areas of law
  • Experience of instructing and managing external counsel
  • Ability to contribute to strategic discussions
  • Ability to work in a busy and fast paced environment
  • Developing knowledge of regulatory framework within which Together operates

Desirable:

  • Knowledge and experience in property law
  • Knowledge and experience of other areas of law
  • Previous in house experience
