Royal HaskoningDHV is a global leader in the integrated design and initiator of innovations on waterfront developments. The task of the Leading Professional Waterfront Development is to bring all of Royal HaskoningDHV’s knowledge and experience together and act as thought leader across the broad range of knowledge fields in this area, while also being involved as technical lead in our projects.

What you will do as a Leading Professional Waterfront Developments

Royal HaskoningDHV is a global leader in the integrated design and initiator of innovations on waterfront developments. More than sixty percent of the world’s population lives in coastal areas, which are densely populated, fertile, and have high economic activity. These areas face constant dilemmas between the need to sustain and enhance the natural environment and the wish to develop the waterfront to meet the growing demands of the economy - industry, housing, ports, shipping, and leisure. Moreover, the effects of climate change are putting additional pressure on the already vulnerable communities and assets along the coastline.

Royal HaskoningDHV is very active in waterfront development projects. This ranges from land reclamation for new urban waterfronts, marinas, and recreational developments, offshore airports, creation of energy-islands to support offshore wind park programs, coastal zone protection, and management schemes.

Royal HaskoningDHV brings together both marine civil engineering expertise and the nature-based approach as basis for the design of waterfront developments, which typically means that soft and hard solutions are evaluated on the best fit within the environmental conditions. These waterfront developments sometimes fail to get sufficient traction with decision-makers or obtain financing for implementation as they are approached in silos. An integrated approach is required by bringing the needs and desires of the various stakeholders together. RHDHV, as a thought leader and experienced project initiator at the land-water interface, is well positioned to assist making such projects viable and sustainable.

Developing a waterfront requires extensive multi-disciplinary planning on the short-term, while using the adaptive pathway approach to consider uncertainty around climate change on the long-term. RHDHV is on the forefront of innovations like floating structures, construction of landfill retaining structures in deep water for the reclamation of energy islands, integration of ecological enhancements on coastal structures, and physical modelling of wave impacts. RHDHV uses the latest technologies around hydrodynamic software modelling, 3D-design, BIM, real-time monitoring and digital twins to support decision-makers in monitoring, and managing the (natural) state of the coastline more effectively.

The main two responsibilities/activities of this role are:
  • to be the leading professional expert for waterfront developments globally, and act as “thought leader” to inspire and to drive innovation internally and to be active in promoting RHDHV’s services towards our (potential) clients
  • to be involved in various projects as technical specialist to ensure a high quality level and that the latest innovations are included in our project portfolio on waterfront development

Part of the role also includes:
  • to contribute from the content to leads and proposal writing resulting in additional successful and profitable growth of the business globally
  • to exchange knowledge and to build capacity within the various teams around the globe on the topic of waterfront development
  • to collaborate with other leading professional experts within Royal HaskoningDHV globally and engineering teams regionally to implement projects
