THE GIG

The Intellectual Property (IP) Legal team has a simple mission: Stop copiers and protect innovation for Dr. Martens (DM).

The Junior IP Counsel sits within the IP Legal team, supporting the other IP Counsel in the team which currently consists of the Head of IP and two IP Counsel for EMEA.

The team is a mix of lawyers and non-lawyers, globally monitoring and enforcing against copying to protect the Dr Martens brand and products. To keep their eyes on the whole world, they use all sorts of technology from image recognition, AI and image search.

Our history is incredibly important; the team often deal with IP in icons from the 1960’s and 1970’s.

As our Junior IP Counsel you will be responsible for:

• Drafting/reviewing contracts with an IP focus (liaising with various areas of the business in respect of these) and negotiating such contracts with marketing agencies, customers, lawyers etc.
• Supporting the Head of IP and the two IP Counsel for EMEA, as required, with all aspects of their work to protect the brand and stop the sale of DM lookalike products globally.

THE STUFF THAT SETS YOU APART

Put simply, for this role the key things we’re looking for are:

• Qualified into a respected IP department in a law firm
• IP contracts experience is essential. Must be confident in drafting licences and assignments and negotiating these with lawyers, legal suppliers, and private individuals.
• Ongoing practice in IP and demonstration of ongoing training and keeping up to date on IP case law. Completion of Post Grad Diploma in IP would be great but not essential.
• Research skills – ability to research and summarise legal points and case law.
• Some IP litigation experience (ideally).
• A real team player who is ready to get stuck in as the IP Team is very busy.
• You’ll be a proud custodian of our DM’s culture, embodying what we stand for and encouraging others to do the same.
