About the job

Summary

Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household and business in the UK can rely on a safe, affordable and environmentally sustainable energy supply. We are playing a vital part in accelerating the transition to Net Zero and a carbon neutral energy system - a goal that everyone wants to achieve. Whatever your role, you’ll be playing your part in creating new energy solutions that are great for customers, and great for the environment.

We offer a diverse range of flexible working career opportunities: roles that are stimulating and rewarding, where you can get involved in ground-breaking work. And it’s important to us that we recruit from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds – bringing different perspectives and experiences to our work.

This is a great career move for a talented communications professional who already has experience of leading teams and / or projects. You’ll lead on the implementation of our internal communications and engagement strategy – designed to enhance staff engagement, support and communicate our organisational change objectives and ensure our staff have the information and resources they need to do a great job. You’ll produce and publish content across our full range of internal communications channels and shape discrete strategies for high profile initiatives and or events such as Ofgem’s involvement in the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. You’ll help adapt our internal channels so they’re effective in supporting an organisation where flexible hybrid working will be the norm. Organising and delivering staff events and conferences (both digitally and in person) will also be a key element of the role.

You’ll need to demonstrate that you have first rate writing skills, and that you understand how to ensure consistency of brand and messaging across different media and audiences – in your own material and in that produced by others. A proven track record in developing and implementing communication strategies and campaign plans is essential, alongside experience of managing corporate events, drawing on highly developed organisational skills. You’ll be accustomed to collaborating with others, adopting a flexible approach to meet the needs of different stakeholders, but also being able to challenge appropriately. Familiar with a range of technology and media, you’ll be enthusiastic about the potential of digital communications to successfully engage with dispersed staff groups.

Job description

Ofgem is the energy regulator for Great Britain, and its key purpose is to protect the interest of current and future energy consumers. Everything we do helps consumers by lowering bills, improving service quality and tackling climate change.

The role sits within the Communications team which is responsible for developing and delivering an ambitious internal communications and engagement strategy. Through this we aim to:

1. Drive up staff engagement, by
  • reinforcing understanding of Ofgem’s purpose, vision, values and strategic priorities
  • ensuring senior leaders are visible and available for dialogue
  • involving our people in corporate decisions, and keeping them informed of matters that affect them.

2. Support our organisational change objectives through a timely and high-quality internal comms and engagement campaign, so that
  • Ofgem is a dynamic and world-leading regulator that is pro-consumer and primed for the changes we’re already seeing in energy.
  • We have a diverse and skilled workforce that’s deployed flexibly around a programme of priority work to achieve best value and impact.

3. Ensure our people have the information they need to act quickly and effectively in the consumer interest, including an understanding of Ofgem’s work across the business, and the changing external landscape.

The Internal Communications Manager will lead on internal communication strategies, channels and campaigns, as well as evaluate the impact of our work.

Responsibilities

The Internal Communications Manager’s key responsibilities are:-
  • Implementing our internal communications and engagement strategy, by delivering high-quality, creative and engaging campaigns. This will involve organising, drafting and/or publishing content for key channels such as Ofgem’s intranet (news articles, video, etc), all-staff events with senior leaders, other internal events/seminars, weekly newsletters and office-based digital screens.

  • Developing stand-alone communications strategies and campaign plans for discrete work areas as needed, for example engaging staff on Ofgem’s involvement in the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference and supporting our staff to transition to smart and flexible hybrid home/office working post COVID.

  • Reviewing and where necessary re-developing our internal communications and engagement infrastructure (tools, channels and processes) in the context of hybrid home/office working.

  • Setting standards and coaching Ofgem colleagues on their communication style/tone, and on how to engage and build dialogue with staff using multiple comms channels.

  • Organising key staff events, such as all-staff conferences (digital and in-person), liaising with senior leaders, contractors and a wider network of stakeholders and volunteers as needed.

  • Working with digital and IT colleagues to ensure our intranet is effectively maintained, quality assured, and meets the needs of teams across the business. You will likely need to help lead a full-scale redevelopment of the intranet in 2022.

  • Developing, maintaining and reporting from an evaluation framework for our internal communications and engagement activities.

  • Line management of two internal communications officers.

  • As part of a flexible team there will be opportunities to work in other parts of the Communications team to meet business demands (Channels and Content, Stakeholder Engagement, Media and External Relations, etc). This will require a degree of adaptability on behalf of the job holder.
