Our Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) team forms part of Sweco UK’s Highways business where we support the delivery of Highway projects throughout the UK. The ITS team provides Operational Technology support to a wide spectrum of projects from technology deployment associated with Clean Air Zones to the deployment of all technology required to support Smart Motorways scheme operations.

Having recently been successful on a number of high-profile frameworks we are looking to further expand our Intelligent Transport Systems team which will involve supporting UK ITS team business growth and the delivery of regional and national projects.

We are currently looking for a talented and motivated Principal Consultant to join our Intelligent Transport Systems team.

What does the role involve?

You Will

As part of the UK ITS team, you will be a key part of your role will be to support the strategic planning, delivery and growth of our ITS business unit within the UK. A key part of this role will be related to business development activities as well as the effective utilisation of people, building client relationships and using resources efficiently to deliver projects against agreed programmes and budgets.
  • Be responsible for supporting the further growth of our UK ITS business, with particular emphasis on providing technical consultancy and advisory services to clients, formulating ITS / Technology strategies, preparation of feasibility studies, supporting standard development and developing road mapping processes.
  • Support the delivery of projects relating to the deployment of Operational Technology on the road network that includes developing products and services.
  • Support in raising the profile of Sweco / ITS team capabilities in the UK (regionally / nationally).
  • Contribute to the business strategy for growing the UK ITS business, including the Identification of opportunities, building client relationships and consideration of recruitment to support further team growth and project delivery.
  • Participate / lead in the preparation/presentation of proposals, including offering our multi-disciplinary services and ensuring opportunities are maximised within current frameworks/projects.
  • Where required undertake the role of project manager where you will be responsible for managing resources, budgets and client / stakeholder liaison.
  • Provide technical governance on projects to ensure a “technically excellent” solution in accordance with the client’s brief and Sweco principles.
  • Manage technical and commercial delivery of projects and bids, ensuring they meet scope/requirements and are completed within agreed timescales and budgets.
  • Mentor and support less experienced team members to create a culture of continuous improvement and enable them to maximise their potential and achieve professional qualification.
To Be Successful In This Role You Will
  • Have a degree in a related discipline and be a Chartered Engineer with full membership of an appropriate professional body.
  • Have demonstratable skills in the area of business development, client relationship management and project delivery in the ITS specialism.
  • Have a proven track record of winning projects, project management, supporting bid preparation and subsequently delivering in line with client scope/requirements, timescales and budgets.
  • Have a successful, proven track record of project delivery in relation to ITS projects with significant and demonstrable technical experience in the ITS industry including road-mapping development, preparing feasibility studies, providing client advice / technical consultancy and providing design and construction support.
  • Be familiar with current and emerging best practices / standards relating to the planning, design and operation of ITS solutions.
  • Be a confident communicator to undertake business development activities, managing clients and be commercially astute to secure new and repeat business.
  • Have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt your style to suit your audience.
  • Enjoy working closely with clients and other members of the professional team and playing a pivotal role in establishing the brief and developing solutions that meet and exceed our client’s expectations.
  • Have proven ability in the leadership and motivation of individuals and project teams with an ingrained culture of right first time and the ability to influence others to achieve this.
  • Have the ability to be adaptable and work independently from the outset as the team grows.
