Job description
We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Hydrology team to make a real difference to our water environment within the Wessex area.

Wessex is an exciting and challenging area in which to be a hydrologist due to the diversity and complexity of hydrological issues. With growing populations, the effects of climate change and internationally important habitats that need protection, your work will inform critical decisions that make a real difference to people, industry, and the environment.

You will help our team provide specialist technical advice to internal and external customers for activities that can have a great environmental impact on water resources. You will provide technical assessment of permit applications, undertake water situation reporting, input into our drought management activity, undertake catchment water resource assessments, and help define abstraction licensing strategies based on these assessments.

You will assist with managing the surface water monitoring network (gauging stations, rain gauges), and undertake detailed quality assurance of our flow data as well as contributing to rating reviews. You will have the opportunity to work with water companies, overseeing their investigations where rivers are perceived to be impacted by abstraction and providing comment on their drought and water resource plans.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team
You will be working alongside a small group of hydrologists as part of the multifunctional Groundwater, Hydrology and Contaminated Land team. The Hydrology part of the team support water resources regulation and drought management, providing technical expertise and advice on a range of water resource management projects including Water Framework Directive, Catchment Abstraction Management Strategies, and Restoring Sustainable Abstraction programme and determining water resources permits.
Experience/skills required
We are seeking a numerate individual with a strong scientific background in environmental science and experience of hydrology and water resources. Ideally, you will have a degree in an environmental subject and experience of hydrology and water resources. A post graduate qualification is desirable but not essential. You will be methodical and organised, with great planning and data analysis skills, experienced in delivering high quality work to defined deadlines.

You will also need to carry out site visits and travel between offices, so you will need a full UK driving licence.
Contact and additional information
The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share.

Interviews will be held in March 2023
