Job content

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint two Technical Officers to the Fisheries, Biodiversity & Geomorphology Teams in Solent and South Downs Area: one based in Worthing, Chichester or Pevensey, Sussex; and one in Romsey, Hampshire.
You will help us restore and enhance the natural environment by influencing our work as a regulator, operator, partner, incident responder and advocate.
To be successful you will engage daily with and provide technical advice to the public, anglers, angling clubs, river keepers, fisheries and riparian owners and managers, NGOs, Local Authorities, Water Companies, industry, businesses and developers. This will include assessing ecological risks and collaboratively delivering benefits for people and wildlife, through our permitting processes.
You will make a better environment for wildlife through improving wild fish stocks and tackling invasive species, as well as promoting sustainable fisheries, creating more opportunities to go fishing, boosting social inclusion and the local economy.
You’ll be directly involved in a range of fisheries enforcement responsibilities, working with other law enforcement agencies, handling sensitive information, playing a role in enforcement operations, crewing our inshore patrol vessel, and responding to fisheries incidents. This will frequently require working outside of normal office hours and in potentially hostile situations.
The team
You’ll join a Team of ecologists and fisheries specialists, integrating fisheries and biodiversity management and fisheries enforcement. We conserve and enhance rivers, still-waters, wetlands, estuaries and coastal habitats to deliver long-lasting environmental improvements for future generations.
Major challenges include improving fish/eel habitats and passage, protecting vulnerable fish populations, restoring urban rivers and still waters, eradicating invasive non-native species, tackling illegal fishing, enhancing diversity in angling, building climate change resilience and contributing to sustainable development.
