Housekeeper (University Accommodation)

University residences provide accommodation to approximately 5,500 students across the university. We are committed to providing a professional, customer focused service to a wide range of people.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and reliable individual, delivering an efficient and effective housekeeping service on a student residences site.

This is a full time, open-ended post - 35 hours per week, available immediately.

The role will require a flexible approach to working hours and is based on working 5 days out of 7 each week, as required, to support the achievement of the departments goals.

Starting Salary: £18,212 (with four annual increments up to £19,623) - £9.97 per hour.

Package includes 32 days holiday per year plus 8 bank holidays, pro rata for part time staff, as well as access to a range of staff discounts, as well as access to a range of staff discounts

Job Description

MAIN DUTIES
  • To supervise the Senior Domestic and Domestic Assistants in their day to day duties.
  • To deliver on the job training to staff as required.
  • To organise work schedules, complete time sheets and arrange cover for absent staff.
  • To assist in the performance management of staff.
  • To meet and greet customers as directed by the Manager, including show rounds, open days etc.
  • To liaise with the residences unit team in the preparation and service of rooms, as required.
  • To ensure all equipment is properly used and maintained, including personal protective equipment.
  • To issue and maintain cleaning materials/linen and check stock levels.
  • To check and report maintenance faults/damage to site Handyperson and/or residences unit team as required.
  • To issue keys as required and be accountable for their location.
  • To produce and distribute housekeeping notices as required.
  • To distribute and maintain notices/mail, ensuring addressee only mail is delivered in person.
  • To clean designated areas as required.
  • To carry out scheduled health and safety checks and periodical checks on site, reporting any issues identified.
  • To ensure health and safety procedures and policies are strictly adhered to and hazards are identified/controlled.
  • To assist in welfare matters and direct the student to sources of information/assistance.
  • To provide a reception service and cover reception duties where required – this may mean some extended/altered working hours.
  • To carry out routine administration tasks as directed by the Manager.
  • To attend and actively participate in all basic training as identified in Campus Services Training Matrix.
  • To identify your personal training needs in conjunction with your Manager, ensuring that learning is transferred to the workplace.
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and of other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, EC directives and the University’s Safety, Health and Environment Policies and procedures and to cooperate with the University on any legal duties placed on it as the employer. As a member of staff with managerial/supervisory responsibilities you will also be responsible for ensuring that University policy and procedures and legal duties are applied within your areas and that appropriate risk assessments are undertaken, necessary actions are implemented and staff within your area are fully conversant and trained in respect of their Health and Safety obligations.
  • To actively participate in Quality and Customer Care initiatives.
  • To ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate.
  • The role will require a flexible approach to working hours and is 5 days out of 7, which will include evenings and weekends to support the achievement of the department’s goals.
  • To provide a service to customers during arrivals/departures, conferences and other busy periods which may be within other residences and involve working additional hours.
  • You may be asked to perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role.

  • Experience of stock control.
  • Proven ability to speak Welsh or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of health and safety issues including an understanding of the risk assessment process.

CAMPUS SERVICES INFORMATION

Campus Services operates in two parts, Campus Services – Residences and Campus Services – Commercial Development.

Campus Services – Residences manages accommodation places for approximately 5,500 students, both catered and self-catered.


The Campus Services - Commercial Development provides the key services of Catering & Food Service, Sport, Day Care and Conferences to students, staff and visitors at Cardiff University.

In terms of catering, there are cafés and restaurants conveniently located across University campuses, in addition to a delivered hospitality service.

Cardiff University Sport exists to provide students and staff with a balanced, high quality and integrated sport service which meets the needs of a broad range of users.

The Day Care Centre offers facilities for children aged between 10 weeks and 5 years and the Centre is divided into sections appropriate to the ages and development of the children.

Both residential and catering facilities are utilised for conferences and functions during the University’s vacation periods. A purpose built and designed conference centre and conference facility is also available throughout the year.

The Campus Services operation is supported by its own central administration functions covering the allocation of residences, human resource and quality, purchasing, facilities, finance, and general administration.
