This Role is for 20 hours per week on a rota basis
Communication
  • Assisting patients, staff and visitors with directional enquiries and other queries.
  • Using all communication equipment in a polite and appropriate manner.
  • Maintaining good relationships with other departmental staff, both within and out with the
  • Portering Department.
  • Using PDA equipment to carry out duties
  • Using computers to carry out online training
  • Answering telephone at helpdesk and responding to customer enquiries
  • Management
  • Managing own work tasks in accordance with Departmental standards.
  • Health, Safety and Security
  • Maintaining, supplying and distributing of medical gases cylinders for wards and departments
  • and manifolds
  • Ordering and replenishing of medical gases stock as required.
  • Identifying and replacing faulty medical gas regulators.
  • Driving Vehicles and ensuring vehicles are used appropriately and all faults, accidents are
  • reported.
  • Reporting any faulty equipment to Head Porter’s office and assisting in withdrawing
  • equipment from use.
  • Cleaning of all Patient Moving Equipment after every use.
  • Deep cleaning of all Patient Moving Equipment when required using appropriate substances
  • and equipment.
  • Undertaking the decanting of liquid nitrogen for Dermatology as required.
  • Disposal of all waste
  • Maintaining cleanliness of entrances, work areas and grounds as necessary
  • Promoting and adhering to all Trust Health and Safety and Security polices.
  • Assist in training of new staff, including one to one training
  • To report any incidents, accidents and near misses in accordance with the Trust Incident
  • Policy.
  • To maintain safe clinical practice in diagnosis and treatment (clinical staff only).
  • To ensure own safety and the safety of all others who may be affected by the Trust’s
  • business.
  • To comply with all Trust policies and procedures to protect the health, safety and welfare of
  • anyone affected by the Trust’s business.
  • To comply with the Trust Risk Management Strategy and Directorate/Department clinical and
  • health and safety policies and procedures.
  • To ensure that equipment provided for the protection of health and safety is maintained and
  • used appropriately.
  • To comply with emergency procedures relevant to your particular Directorate/Department.
  • To attend all Mandatory Training with regard to fire, health and safety, manual handling and
  • control of infection.
    Clinical Professional and/or Technical Responsibilities
  • Collecting specimens from wards and departments to Pathology and return of specimens if
  • required.
  • Collecting, delivering and processing post for onward distribution
  • Delivering of pharmacy to wards and departments
  • Transporting of blood and blood products to and from Pathology to wards and departments.
  • Undertaking patient transport duties between wards and departments ensuring patient modesty
  • and safety at all times.
  • Transporting deceased patients from wards to the Mortuary using concealment trolleys.
  • Assisting in the viewing of deceased patients by relatives in accordance with Trust procedures
  • Transferring and moving of training equipment as required.
  • Assisting in the transfer, moving and disposal of equipment and furniture.
  • Working in all areas covered by the department.
  • Assisting Security staff by providing cover to the Control Room when required
  • Quality/Clinical Governance

  • Being familiar with & adhering to Trust Polices & guidance on infection prevention & Control;
  • Attending Trust Induction & mandatory training programmes in infection prevention & control;
  • Including infection prevention & control as an integral part of your continuous
  • personal/professional development;
  • Taking personal responsibility as far as is reasonably practicable, to help ensure that effective
  • prevention & control of healthcare associated infections is embedded into everyday practice &
    applied consistently by you & your colleagues
  • To be aware of the principles of clinical governance and understand what the benefits for patients
  • and staff are.
  • To understand the clinical governance structure within the Trust and how you may be involved.
  • To participate in clinical governance activities within the Trust and where applicable across
  • organisational boundaries.
  • To ensure that you continuously look for ways to improve the quality of the service or care you
  • provide to patients or other services/departments, where appropriate.
  • To explore ways to involve and consult with patients, public and carers when developing or
  • evaluating services or the care you provide, where appropriate.
  • To participate in clinical audit activity where appropriate, involving other professions/disciplines.
  • To ensure patient confidentiality is maintained at all times and that you do not access patient
  • related information (either electronic or paper based) which you do not need during the course of
    your work.
  • To comply with the procedure for handling any requests under the Freedom of Information Act
  • thereby ensuring that they are dealt with in a timely, specific and confidential manner.
