We have an exciting opportunity for a Health Play Specialist to join the Play team. The role will involve supporting babies, children and young people on the ward and throughout their hospital experiences.

The post will cover 3 units across the 2 hospital sites:
The Play Team work in A&E, inpatient and out-patient settings, running alongside clinics and with our Radiology Department, providing play preparation and distraction for phlebotomy, MRI scans, etc.

The purpose of play and recreational provision within a healthcare environment is to facilitate access to normalising play in an appropriate & safe environment where developmental norms and goals can be achieved and maintained. Without the provision of skilled play interventions, opportunities for normal growth & development can be limited, leading to restriction or regression in development.

The post holder will be responsible for providing play opportunities & activities, providing normal play and play therapy e.g. preparing children for procedures, distraction therapy, emotional support & interventions within mainly ambulatory and A&E departments.

The post holder will create a positive, welcoming environment for children of all ages and adapt the way they work to the age they are working with. They will identify the child’s emotional and developmental needs and understand the impact that healthcare interventions have upon these and develop play plan interventions that will be beneficial during the child’s care pathway.

The philosophy of Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is that the care of children should be family centred, with parents actively encouraged to participate in the care needs of their child where appropriate.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is a large acute hospital Trust in the county of Kent.

The Trust provides a full range of general hospital services and some areas of specialist complex care to around 500,000 people living in the south part of West Kent and the north part of East Sussex.

The Trust’s core catchment areas are Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells and their surrounding boroughs. We work from two main clinical sites: Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. Tunbridge Wells Hospital opened in 2011 and provides single rooms with en-suites for all in-patients – the first of its kind in the country.

We employ over 6,500 full and part-time staff in a huge range of clinical and non-clinical roles across both of our hospital sites.
