Job description 1
We are looking for a motivated individual to join a small friendly team of experts focused on the management and protection of groundwater.

Our Area (Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, West and East Sussex) is heavily dependent upon groundwater for drinking water and other uses and you will play a critical role in safeguarding the quality of this important resource.

You will provide technical leadership to ensure that improvements to groundwater quality are achieved through:

  • A strategic overview of our groundwater quality data to ensure our evidence is fit for purpose
  • Effective use of our data to inform Water Framework Directive decision making
  • Project manage the implementation of action plans in priority areas for the protection of groundwater
  • Influencing and quality assuring water company investigations and plans to ensure the protection of groundwater in future schemes
  • Providing technical support for assessing risks to groundwater from pollution incidents
  • Proactive engagement with internal and external customers to improve groundwater quality
  • Supporting and coaching members of the team and engaging with our national colleagues to ensure local issues are addressed in accordance with our guidance

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team 1
The post is part of the Groundwater, Hydrology and Contaminated Land team in Solent and South Downs Area. We are responsible for providing technical and scientific expertise to our field and flood forecasting teams, and to a wide range of external stakeholders, all to protect the quality and quantity of groundwater.

We are based in one of the Area offices listed above, with some home working, visits to other offices and occasional site work.
Experience/skills required 1
Enthusiastic and motivated you will have the ability to demonstrate the skills and experience below:

  • A degree in a relevant scientific or environmental discipline and relevant work-based experience
  • A good understanding of groundwater quality and the pressures on it, together with knowledge of relevant environmental legislation and policy
  • Effective and confident communication skills, able to present convincing verbal and written argument to a range of audiences
  • The ability to lead and coach others to develop their technical capabilities
  • A practical common-sense approach to problem solving and be able to articulate solutions in a simple, persuasive way
  • Ability to manage your own workload and are able to collaborate with others
  • Project management experience
  • Use relevant IT software to explain, illustrate, inform and influence others
