Education required: To apply for this placement, you must be:

Currently studying an Undergraduate degree in Communications, Business, Sociology, Psychology, English or HR, or a media related discipline.

Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) university for the duration of your placement.

If you have already graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.

Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

Expected Start date: July 2024

Duration: 1 year (approximately)

Salary:A salary of £21,400 plus a bonus

Global Supply Chain (GSC) is the group within GSK that is responsible for making and supplying medicines and vaccines across the globe. At our manufacturing sites we produce over 2.3 billion medication packs and vaccines doses to 90% of the world’s countries.

An opportunity exists for talented undergraduates with a passion for communications to play a significant role in supporting internal and/or external communications at one of our world-leading pharmaceutical manufacturing sites. Working alongside a small team of on-site and off-site communications specialists, you will gain experience of how effective communications contribute to the site’s success.

The role will include:

  • Keeping employees at all levels informed of change, performance and progress at the site

  • Being involved in delivering the site’s communications strategy

  • Drafting news stories, case studies and features for internal and external communications channels from digital to print

  • Preparing materials from posters to videos

  • Organising town halls, site conferences and specific campaigns

  • Writing, designing and giving presentations

  • Creating clear and consistent messages using multiple communication platforms

  • Embedding the culture, mindset and behaviours demanded by our culture

  • Sharing and celebrating our successes

  • Interacting with different levels of the business to ensure the appropriate approach is taken to engage staff across all functions

  • Utilising a range of digital and physical channels and platforms

This office-based placement will suit students looking to gain broad experience and exposure to multiple business areas. It is perfect for students looking for experience in communications in a business setting, particularly if they have experience in written and video communication in different settings. Communications is an important function for businesses across the world, therefore this placement gives excellent experience for a variety of future roles and opportunities.

You will be applying the skills you already have learnt and developing new skills such as team working, effective communication and time management. You will work with, and learn from, an experienced team. They will coach and mentor you during your year to help you achieve your potential.

Role/Location 1:Barnard Castle

The Barnard Castle site is located in the Northeast of England and is sited within the County Durham countryside. Barnard Castle is a key site for GSK with a large number of New Products coming through development at site. We manufacture and supply a huge range of different pharmaceutical products from Sterile Products (Syringes and Vials) to Liquid Inhalations and Dermatologicals. We have recently opened a new state of the art aseptic digital facility producing biopharmaceuticals.

A communications placement at Barnard Castle will give the successful candidate an opportunity to support the internal communications plan and activities for the site. Working within our communications team you have the opportunity to produce and deliver high quality materials to support leaders in their cascade of messaging and drive staff engagement.

As you gain experience you will be expected to deliver a business improvement project relating to the overall site vision and strategy.

The role will also require the successful candidate to manage day to day communication channels, create ongoing metrics to measure engagement and support community/charity and site events.

Role/Location 2: Ware

Ware is the largest GSK site in the UK with a thriving early talent community, lots of social activities, and a warm and welcoming support network. The Ware Global Supply Chain (GSC) site has modern facilities, uses advanced technologies, and provides amazing development opportunities for future careers. The site manufactures and supplies oral solid dose tablets (for HIV and oncology) and respiratory devices (for asthma and COPD) to over 140 countries across the world, as well as to patients participating in clinical trials, making a real difference to people’s lives. With a focus on new product introduction, it is a key site within the GSK network and an exciting place to work. Situated in the heart of Ware in Hertfordshire, the site has access to beautiful countryside as well as excellent transport links, being only 40 minutes away from London and Cambridge by train.

A Communications placement at Ware will give the successful candidate the opportunity to participate in a range of practical communications programmes, supporting our site’s engagement and culture priorities. Working closely with our site communications lead, you’ll quickly develop an awareness of the day-to-day challenges and deliverables of a pharma manufacturing facility. Using your people-facing skills, you will communicate information and engage site employees in our fundamentals of safety, sustainability and quality culture, as well as our approach to continuous improvement.

This placement offers the chance to gain a deep understanding of both digital and non-digital communications channels and learn to deliver internal communications to employees using a variety of approaches, e.g., videos and multimedia packages through to print materials and face-to-face briefing packs. In addition, you will work to continuously improve the reach and impact of our communications, analysing data about our digital channels, as well as qualitative feedback.

Role/Location 3: Worthing

GSK Worthing recently celebrated 60 years of manufacturing pharmaceutical products. Our key product is an antibiotic, and we manufacture approx. 50 million packs per year supplying patients around the world. Our site is situated on the South Coast about 30 minutes from Brighton and 1 hour by train from London, offering a good degree of extracurricular activities outside of work.

A Communications placement at Worthing will give the successful candidate the opportunity to experience hands-on practical communications techniques, supporting our site’s culture and engagement priorities. As well as the considerable ‘people-facing’ elements of this role, there is also an opportunity to gain awareness of the day-to-day challenges and deliverables of a pharma manufacturing facility, including engaging everyone in our safety and quality culture and our approach to continuous improvement.

This placement offers the chance to gain a deep understanding of our channel strategy, learning to deliver internal communications to employees using a variety of channels and approaches, from digital and media-based campaigns to physical materials and face-to-face briefing packs. They’ll work closely with our small site team to continuously improve the reach and echo of our communications, analysing data about our digital channels as well as taking qualitative feedback.
