LOCATION: At any location in the City
HOURS OF WORK: 37 hours per week
Essential: Current full driving licence and NVQ 1/2 in Street Cleansing/Horticulture or equivalent.
JOB PURPOSE AND ROLE
To undertake a full range of skilled and unskilled tasks required for the effective and efficient maintenance of all horticultural, street cleansing and landscaping features dependent upon area of responsibility. Areas of work to include cleansing activities and all general horticultural operations consistent with an NVQ level 1/2 and be able to instruct lower graded staff and work to tight timescales and to a high standard.

Main Duties And Responsibilities
  • To carry out skilled and unskilled tasks including street cleansing, horticultural activities, which includes ornamental and selective pruning, bedding and sports turf work along with grass cutting and some cemetery-based duties including burial works. You will also be expected to provide direction for lower graded staff as appropriate.
  • To safely use and correctly set the full range of tools and equipment supplied by the service area if necessary, including the use of powered hand tools, light plant and pedestrian operated equipment.
  • To liaise with Unskilled, Semi-skilled, Senior Environmental Services Operatives, Lead Operatives, Supervisors, Managers, other employees, Council Officers, and the public as required, promoting a positive image that enhances the reputation of the service.
  • Must be prepared to support the work carried out by other council divisions, in particular information required by the Councils Enforcement section regarding statements and information about waste that could lead to a successful prosecution
  • To operate to work schedules and specifications in order to carry out the full range of duties required and organise lower graded staff in their service delivery (e.g. temporary/agency/unskilled operatives)
  • To be able to drive and operate mechanical equipment where instructed and qualified and licensed to do so, including vans up to 5.5 tonne including ride on mowers, precinct sweepers etc
  • To ensure that schedules of programmed and non programmed work are undertaken in accordance with service standards and the requirements of the client/customer under the direction of higher graded staff.
  • To maintain all necessary records, ensuring that they are complete and accurate e.g. worksheets, timesheets and other records including chemical logs and vehicle check lists where appropriate.
  • To ensure that client/customer requests are dealt with in a prompt, competent and safe manner, routinely reporting to the Lead Operatives/Supervisor/Manager.
  • To assist in providing effective communication across the service.
  • To be able to work on own initiative (including driving duties where applicable) or as part of a team.
  • You will be required to respond to emergency calls, weekend working and Bank holidays as part of the rostering arrangements operated within Public Realm Services along with additional days throughout the week as requested and agreed.
  • To contribute towards the delivery of the aims and objectives of Environmental Services, and to undertake any appropriate training as and when appropriate.
  • To participate in staff development, appraisal and training as appropriate, attend regular 1-1 meetings including continuous professional development.
  • To comply with the Council’s Customer Care, Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety policies, standing orders, and financial regulations and any other relevant policies of the organisation.
  • To carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post subject to any reasonable adjustments under the Disability Discrimination Act.
