Marine Engineering & Systems – T31

The Electricians role is based within our Marine Engineering & Systems – T31 business area

Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate and have secured contracts for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting exports of frigates the engineering team is actively working on other ship newbuild and life extension programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers.

The role

The difference our new Electrician will make

As an Electrician you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Installing electrical equipment within the marine environment, including shock and non-shock mounted items.

Day to day, you’ll help with the installation of electrical equipment within the marine environment, including shock and non-shock mounted items and the installation of cable containments systems, including but not limited to, Ladder rack, Cable basket and Carrier tray. Help with the installation and check wire of electrical systems cabling within the marine environment, systems including but not limited to, power distribution (110, 240, 440v), Lighting, Fire detection, Control circuits (HVAC, condition monitoring, communications, etc). You will have various cable securing methods for the above, understanding system segregation, phase rotation and fault current implications. And you will help with Penetration management of cabling taking into consideration Electromagnetic Current(EMC) implications, segregation, and bend radius and glanding and termination of cabling at equipment, various methods required ranging from single core domestic style, to combat systems Mil spec connectors.

Essential Experience
  • A minimum of an ONC in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • A recognised electrical apprenticeship
  • Experience working within environment with energised equipment, aware of isolation & safe systems of work requirements.
  • Open mind to change (supporting Composite working environment)
  • Must be willing to develop self through training to support programme requirements
  • Obtain or have the ability to obtain ITAR and SC Clearance

Core Skills
  • Multi pin Plug Connection/Assembly
  • Low Voltage Systems installation
  • Installation of control systems
  • Fire detection and alarm systems installation and maintenance
  • Emergency lighting installation and maintenance
  • Installation and maintenance of broadcast systems

Composite Skills
  • First fixing methods (studding)
  • Temp Lighting Refurbishment
  • Temporary extract systems installation and maintenance
  • Temporary power requirements installation and maintenance
  • Temporary and emergency lighting installation and maintenance
  • Installation of care and maintenance, protection materials and methods
  • Assist with other trades installation scope where required, being led by suitably qualified experienced persons (SQEP).
  • Lead other trades and support functions where required, acting as the SQEP individual, ensuring all work is carried out to efficiently and to the desired standards for both safety and quality
