About The Role

We’re looking for a Lead Mechanical Handling Engineer to join us at HMNB Devonport, one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. We’re a key strategic partner to our customers; the MOD and the Royal Navy. We ensure that the UK Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in Devonport and around the world, delivering complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and applying our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

Your primary focus will be to manage the delivery of mechanical handling engineering work packages to the required scope, quality, schedule and cost and manage the technical aspects of these work packages throughout the project lifecycle from identification of the need, through to handover.

You will lead and manage technical design packages agreeing project related objectives, managing designer performance and making appropriate technical management responses. Ensure that the processes and activities being managed are appropriately documented with appropriate records maintained and configuration and quality controls applied.

As the Lead Mechanical Handling Engineer you will produce and check design documentation including reports, calculations and drawings that cover the scope of operations. Ensure design deliverables are produced to agreed standards, schedule and budget. Plan for effective project implementation, identifying key factors and leading the project’s technical planning process. As well as ensure effective Quality Management Arrangements, operate and deliver through compliance with Babcock’s Business Management System and Technical Manual.

Lastly you will ensure that staff and contractors are familiar with the hazards and risks associated with the work undertaken by the delegated engineering team through effective management and communication of the Risk Assessment. Interface with other disciplines and stakeholders and report regularly to the Project Manager and Design Manager on progress, potential problems and solutions.

What do I need to do the role?
You will need a degree in an appropriate engineering discipline and Chartered Engineer, registered with Engineering Council.

We would also like you to have experience in the following areas:
  • Chartered Engineer (Mechanical, electrical or Civil although Mechanical will be preferred)
  • Design/specification of mechanical handling equipment or systems (Cranes)
  • Nuclear Experience desirable
  • Experience of design support to construction, operation, refit/repair of conventional and nuclear submarines and/or facilities

What else do I need to know?
  • The successful candidate will need to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements. This may require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving ‘Security Check’ (SC) clearance.
