Summary

Egg Marketing Inspector – Northern Delivery Area, Team 1
Located in the North of England it is anticipated that the successful candidate will be based at one of our offices in the North East of England or Cumbria with travel to other locations working as part of a larger team in the North of England.

Egg Marketing Inspectors cover a local area over a number counties visiting farms, hatcheries, and other premises (including premises in urban areas) that produce, pack, wholesale, process or distribute eggs produced for human consumption. The purpose of the inspections is to ensure that eggs are graded to a high-quality standard, labelled in accordance with EC legislation and apply effective and proportionate controls for the enforcement of Food Hygiene Regulations.

Egg Marketing Inspectors should be familiar with the poultry industry, have knowledge/experience of poultry production systems, be versed in the use of IT systems and capable of organising their own workload in what is often a fast paced and sometimes stressful environment during disease outbreaks and other incidents.

This post is a full-time post - Due to the tasks we ask our technical staff to carry out this post cannot be completed in part time working patterns, this is a regulatory requirement.

Job description

  • Responsibility for enforcement of regulations including Eggs and Chicks (England) 2009.
  • Visiting premises that require inspection by risk based assessment to include all types of egg producers, egg packing stations, wholesalers, hatcheries and processing/boiling plants.
  • Ensuring the standards are being met, particularly the quality and weight and grading of eggs, the labelling of containers and packs and the marking of eggs are being complied with. Conducting routine quality/weight/UV checks at egg packing centres, wholesalers and importers.
  • Applying regulatory and enforcement action when non-compliances and contraventions are found.
  • Carrying out complex record reconciliations and/or audits at packing centres and production units to check claims made on eggs/ packs/labelling as well as egg production/sales levels and for compliance with the National Control Programme for Salmonella.
  • Manual handling of boxes.
  • Hygiene Inspections at Egg Production sites.
  • Obtaining samples under the National Control Plan for layer flocks. Also assist APHA colleagues in the event of restrictions being placed on farm.
  • Compliance checking for Free Range and Barn Production Units under welfare legislation and technical assessment of new / rebuilt cage, Barn and Free Range units.
  • Collection of egg samples on behalf of Veterinary Medicines Directorate.
  • On occasion, there may be a business requirement to undertake inspections throughout England and Wales, which may require overnight stays away from home and extensive travel.
  • You may be required to assist in additional technical duties as requested by managers to ensure regional and national delivery of targets.
In addition to the above tasks EMI’s may be required to play an active part in contingency planning for outbreaks of exotic notifiable disease and other emergencies. This would involve liaising with stakeholders, implementing and participating in local contingency plans, and developing skills to ensure you are able to undertake your contingency role.

During outbreaks of notifiable diseases EMI’s are required to undertake tasks as directed by management to contribute to the control and eradication of the disease including acting in specific roles at an infected premises (IP) including gate officer, case officer and other necessary tasks for which appropriate training has been given.

Responsibilities

Personal Specification
All candidates must be skilled in written and spoken English to enable effective communication about poultry animal health topics with customers, service users and colleagues.

Candidates should have 2 years’ experience in a relevant agricultural or enforcement industry or an agricultural background with a relevant qualification and knowledge of the poultry industry, e.g. through a period of work experience.

Driving is an essential part of the job for all Egg Marketing Inspectors. candidates must hold a full and valid driving license.

Candidates should also be able to demonstrate skills, experience and knowledge in:

  • Farm and poultry production systems.
  • Basic Health and Safety and an understanding of safe working practices on farms and production / packing systems.
  • Understanding of GB agricultural and associated industries.
  • Able to manage own workload and plan work efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate confidently.
  • High standard of interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to use various IT platforms such as Word and Excel.
  • All candidates must be skilled in written and spoken English to enable effective communication with customers and colleagues. To include drafting witness statements where needed.

Full UK Driving Licence

Qualifications

Minimum: 5 GCSE’s @ grade 4 or above including English and Mathematics.

Languages

Having a sufficient command of spoken and written English to effectively perform the role being undertaken by a public sector worker in a customer-facing role and hold a GCSE in English Language or equivalent qualification at the minimum pass (level 4 or equivalent).
