About the job

Summary

APHA’s National Wildlife Management Centre unit at sand Hutton York delivers a range of research as well as scientific, technical and field-based projects for Defra and other customers. This supports the implementation of strategies to tackle human wildlife conflicts.

This role is primarily field-based and focused mammal management. The post will support a number of projects including fertility control project in grey squirrels. Some projects are very likely to require periods of working away from home in various parts of the country (commitments could range from reasonable distance travelled within a day to occasionally, 1 to 3 weeks maximum away from home at any one time). Candidates will therefore need to be reasonably mobile and have a flexible/adaptive approach to their duties in response to business needs.

Job description

  • Delivering fieldwork, e.g. setting of live capture traps and taking samples from grey squirrels
  • Delivering or supporting the delivery of skills training in field-based elements (to internal staff &/or external customers) e.g. survey, trapping etc;
  • Mentoring/coaching internal staff as necessary in such skills and tasks;
  • Monitoring animal behaviour by radio-tracking and/or camera trapping to gather data in support of other research projects;
  • Undertaking surveys of population levels;
  • Assisting with the collection of carcasses where required for disease surveillance projects (e.g. deer, boar, foxes, badgers);
  • Supporting appropriate desk-based project work, as instructed by relevant project managers, data checking, reviewing video surveillance footage or cataloguing camera trap stills etc.
  • Assisting in laboratory analyses when needed

The roles will primarily be field-based. Successful candidates will therefore need to be physically fit, able to drive, able to work in difficult or steep terrain where necessary, have a flexible attitude to business/task needs, be adaptable and a good, inclusive team player who is willing to step in and help others. You will need to be a good communicator, able to strike up good working relations with external parties such as farmers/landowners or ‘customers’ undertaking training. The ability to undertake reasonable periods of work away from home in other parts of the country will be essential.

Candidates will therefore need to demonstrate relevant experience and/or knowledge and skills in wildlife fieldwork of this nature. They will also be able to undertake appropriate desk-based work using standard Microsoft Office applications in support of other projects.

This is a full-time post that can be carried out part-time if a job share can be arranged.
