We are looking for an Editor to join the Penguin Press team and work across the Penguin Classics catalogue on a part time, 12 month fixed term contract basis.

In this role, you will review existing editions; find and commission expert external editors to work on new introductions and other content; and edit new materials when they come in.

Penguin Classics is the world’s largest and most iconic classics list, with nearly 3,000 titles in print. Spanning the ancient world to the twenty-first century, and ranging across genres, languages and continents, Penguin Classics is a constantly evolving and expanding project.

You will be passionate and knowledgeable about classic literature, with strong research and editing skills, wide-ranging taste and an exceptional eye for detail. You will be aware of current cultural debates around the literary canon and understand what makes Penguin Classics editions appealing and engaging for readers today.

This role will be part-time (2 days per week/14 hours) and based remotely, reporting to the Publishing Director. You don’t need to come from a publishing background to be considered for this position.

If you would like to apply, please submit a CV and Cover Letter by midnight on Sunday 5th September 2021.

As part of your application, we’d like you to respond to the following question in your Cover Letter (no more than 300 words):

  • Please tell us about a Penguin Classics edition that you admire, or one that you think could be better (and how!)

Salary:
c.£30,000 (pro rata) depending on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus bonus and benefits.
