An exciting opportunity has arisen for aCurator and Lecturer: Collections and Material Culture at Bath Spa University. This is a fantastic opportunity to join our team at a critical time in its work on its own collections and historic estate. Its collections comprise fine art, natural history, social history, specialist publications, and an archive relating to its own history. Its two main campuses in Bath, Newton Park and Locksbrook Road, are significant historic assets, and outstanding resources for learning. We want to establish better systems and processes for the management of these collections, and more imaginative approaches to drawing on them across the curriculum.

(This is a Fixed Term Contract, Maternity Cover- 10 months with the possibility of extension)

About the Role


Within the role you will collaborate with Heads of School to formulate strategies for the University’s collections, focusing on their integration into learning, teaching, and research initiatives. Your responsibilities will include providing support to program and module leaders, contributing to module development in the School of Writing, Publishing & the Humanities, and identifying opportunities for student placements and external partnerships. Ensuring accessibility of collections to all stakeholders, planning display projects, overseeing collection management systems, and actively seeking external funding for projects are key aspects of this role. In addition, you will contribute to teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, help supervise student projects and oversee the work of a Collections Intern


About You


You will have a proven track record in managing and utilising diverse forms of collections and material culture, showcasing specific expertise in fine art curation. You will bring demonstrated experience in project planning, design, implementation, and evaluation, along with a background in developing training or mentoring programs for project teams. Proficiency in using material culture as a foundation for research is a key requirement. Knowledge of current standards and practices in collections development and management, coupled with a keen interest in utilising collections for learning and teaching, as well as documenting contemporary practices in arts and humanities, is essential. In addition, you will also possess excellent problem-solving skills and have a strong ICT proficiency.


Additional Information


Applicants with less than five years teaching experience in Higher Education of at least 0.8FTE or equivalent who do not hold a Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Certificate accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or HEA fellowship will be required to complete an approved Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education course during the first two years of employment.

Applicants with more than five years teaching experience in Higher Education of at least 0.8FTE or equivalent who do not hold a Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Certificate accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or HEA fellowship will be required to accredit their practice through the HEA fellowship application process during their 6-month probation period.

Salary - Grade Ac3S (£42,978 per annum)
