Job Purpose

The purpose of the Content Designer role is to ensure content is professionally written to corporate standards to ensure customers can access information and services they need online without needing to call or visit the organisation in person.

This purpose requires the Content Designer to work collaboratively and positively with stakeholders to identify user needs and create and edit content, so it is intuitive and easy to understand. This process may require testing with customers or staff and / or researching how other comparable organisations deliver similar user journeys.

They will be responsible for managing multiple content related projects with verifying levels of complexity and deadlines.

The Content Designer is the subject matter expert on how best to present online content and therefore must display and maintain a high degree of professional behaviour as they will be training and mentoring team members and communicating routinely with stakeholders across the organisation including elected Members.

The Content Designer will act as the lead in the absence of the Senior Content Designer.

Key Accountabilities

Responsible for the delivery of drafting and publishing customer focussed online content. This includes reviewing raw content supplied from a subject matter expert, amending and adding new content, formatting the content in a variety of website templates and publishing in a format that is accessible and is easy to scan on various devices.

Provide professional advice and support on content services and supporting services to problem solve related issues such as content not displaying as intended.

Lead on mentoring and training team members and website contributors who need help in producing and publishing accessible content. Provide advice to a range of customers (including service units and external partners/organisations), on how to make effective use of the website and lead their involvement in shaping and developing the website

Independently manage web content projects and/or reviews of content and contribute to corporate projects and/or reviews to challenge existing practices and generate ideas and solutions.

Effectively estimate content projects/reviews, timescales and resource requirements. This may include creating Statements of Work and liaising with stakeholders to agree on a final cost and scheduling in the work.

Independently manage time and costs recording allocated time against agreed cost codes costs and takes action where these deviate from agreed tolerances.

Lead on training supporting website contributors to help facilitate and continuously improving the content management process to ensure content is published on time and to the required standard.

Participate in a range of digital projects and maintain a professional, courteous and helpful service to our stakeholders and their customers and where possible exceed relevant performance indicators.

Able to identify user needs, write content plans, design and publish content in the best format to the end user. Ensuring web systems comply with branding, accessibility and ‘plain English’ standards.

Peer review lead reviewing and providing constructive feedback to more junior members of the team on writing good web content, corporate standards and guidelines and best practice for the production and publication of content.

Confident identifying and communicating with stakeholders clearly and regularly without reminders using a variety of communication formats such as presentations, online meetings and face to face visits to help shape and develop positive outcomes.

Take complex language and processes and make them simple to understand and make the case for user-focused design in the process.

Positive participation in the continuous development and improvement of team systems, processes, procedures and practices. For example, contributing to the development of style guides and related process instructions.

Work closely with IT and third party specialists to develop and iterate our web services based on user needs to ensure the best possible customer experience.

Organise, facilitate stakeholder workshops and service review meetings with follow-up with minutes and actions

Organise and manage user testing and research to understand how customers are using the website and make recommendations and solutions.

Analyse and interpret data (e.g., web statistics and Customer Service Centre data) to define/refine content around driving channel shift.

Be comfortable using evidence, data and research to make content decisions. This may include reviewing websites to identify and implement ‘good practice’.

Confident making content accessible using related software such as Adobe Pro and MS Office and testing content is accessible before publication using screen readers and other assistive technologies.

Remain up to date and compliant with all relevant legislation, including accessibility, organisational procedures, policies and professional codes of conduct in order to uphold standards of best practice.

Accounting for expenditure from an agreed budget to fund initiatives such as website development activities (up to £50k).

Influence and persuade stakeholders with regards to defining user needs, and a customer focussed approach and negotiate the best way to present information to help shape and develop websites.

Any other related activities as directed by the Senior Content Designer and/or Online Service Delivery Manager.

Role Demands

The job will be subject to competing priorities and will require the post-holder to be comfortable working under pressure in an organised way to prioritise work and meet deadlines.

The job requires concentrated mental attention over lengthy periods in order to conduct research, analyse findings and troubleshoot on behalf of the team.

The role requires the regular use of hardware (laptop, tablet, mobile devices) including regularly keyboard and screen work.

You will make the best option to make content understandable to different audiences and to demonstrate a proposed approach to content changes or improvements. You can show the value of prototyping to the team.

The role requires regular contact with services, IT professionals and external digital agencies and marketing agencies. The role demands an ability to manage multiple stakeholders many of which with an advanced technical background.

The post-holder will be expected to liaise with Emergency Management in the event of an Emergency Incident. This may include out of office hours responsibilities such as updating content out of hours in emergency situations.

Qualifications and Professional Membership

Degree, or equivalent qualification or equivalent experience demonstrating application of the required levels of knowledge.

Experience

Experience working in a web content management and / or publishing environment and or development and/or digital agency with demonstrable practical experience in generating and developing website improvements and enhancements.

Practical experience drafting and developing content around a user need and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team on a variety of projects in or related to local or central government and their partners.

Significant experience using website systems such as content management, analytics, forms, search and performance management.

Experience and confidence communicating to colleagues professional and accurate advice and establishing credibility with a wide range of customers including people at all levels within and outside the organisation (e.g., senior officers, young people).

A track record of being responsible for certain websites (or part of an organisations online service) demonstrating detailed knowledge of their market and audience.
